    Default Enchant Puzzle

Alternative rock recording artist, Emilie Autumn, released an album called Enchant on 26 February 2003. The album includes a fold-out puzzle board, which together with the recorded songs, comprise a musical treasure hunt known as the Enchant Puzzle. This is the first puzzle treasure hunt album ever done.

Designed entirely by Autumn, who sites Kit Williams' classic puzzle book, Masquerade as her inspiration, the game is won when someone discovers the key to the mythic Faerie Queene's treasures, which include a giant pair of crystal-encrusted wings among other items.

The puzzle as of OCt 27 2005 is still insolved and I ordered the Enchant album to do the puzzle

Just listened to the album, kind of a mix between New Age and Pop genres. Reminds me of a 'light' Tori Amos....its not a bad album. She does have some musical talent but wouldn't call the thing spectacular.

This hunt is bloody brilliant, and I think it deserves more attention. No one who orders this will be disappointed. Even if the music isn't to your taste (I rather liked it), the puzzle is a wonderful tribute to Kit Williams.

The premise is this. A fold-out insert ("puzzleboard") comes with Emilie Autumn's CD "Enchant" (2003). The instructions state:

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO SOLVE THE PUZZLE AND
RETRIEVE THE TREASURE IS CONTAINED WITHIN THE ALBUM
JEWELCASE. USE THE PUZZLEBOARD TO BEGIN YOUR JOUR-
NEY TOWARDS THE PRIZE: THE WINGS, RUFF, FAN, AND
SCEPTRE OF THE FAERIE QUEENE HERSELF. A PRICELESS
COLLECTION OF ARTWORKS, THE QUEENE'S RAIMENTS ARE
ENCRUSTED WITH HUNDREDS OF GENUINE CRYSTALS AND
WROUGHT ENTIRELY BY HAND IN THE FAE TRADITION.

LOOK, LISTEN, AND TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS.

THESE ENCHANTED OBJECTS MAY SOON BELONG TO YOU!

THE RULES: THE GAME BEGINS UPON THE RELEASE OF THE
ENCLOSED ALBUM AND WILL CONTINUE UNTIL IT HAS BEEN
SOLVED, WITH THE PRIZES GOING TO THE FIRST PERSON TO
SOLVE IT. ANYONE MAY PLAY THE GAME REGARDLESS OF
    AGE OR NATIONALITY.

The influence of Kit Williams is obvious; those familiar with Masquerade, The Golden Apple Tale, and Menagerie will recognize the border letters, but Emilie Autumn has stated that knowing the solution to Masquerade won't help.

Here's what I've found so far:

    1. The corners are a rebus for "I believe, too." If the solution involves counting letters around the edge, then this might mean the bottom left is the starting point.

    2. The introductory lines of the track Across the Sky are the first four lines from Shakespeare's Sonnet LIII. The number 53 is depicted on the die in the puzzleboard.

    3. The final solution will probably involve both the puzzleboard and the CD (or at least the lyrics). The instructions say, "Look, listen, and trust your instincts."

    4. The v's and u's are swapped in the riddle sonnet. The solution may involve switching letters. The central picture may indicate this by showing that letters on opposite sides might be exchanged.

    5. The rabbit on the puzzleboard is a tribute to Jack Hare in Masquerade, as is the border letters theme.

    6. The word "Time" is usually capitalized, both in the riddle sonnet and in the official lyrics.

    7. There are 11 border words, 11 mini-border words, and 11 pictures.

    8. There has been some discussion of this puzzle at Emilie Autumn's official website, but no one ever solved it, and conversation dropped off about a year ago.

All the border words appear in lyrics on the Enchant CD:

    EVER
    NEVER
    DREAM
    ALONE
    CHANGE
    FAITH
    CHOICE
    FATE
    VOICE
    NAME
    WHISPER

All the black mini-border letters anagram to form words, all of which appear in lyrics:

    DARK
    WORD
    ANCIENT
    SPELL
    BELIEVE
    VISION
    MIND
    SLEEP
    BEAUTY
    MOMENT
    SHADOW

All the picture words also appear in the lyrics:

    MASK
    TIME
    MOON AND THE STARS
    ROSE
    CURTAIN
    ?
    CASTLE
    STAR
    CLOUDS
    DICE
    PICTURE FRAME

There are 11 of each kind; that is not a coincidence.

Oops, I forgot to mention that the riddle puzzle (not reproduced here to avoid copyright infringement) is a well-constructed sonnet in iambic pentameter, after the fashion of Shakespeare (whom the musician cites for inspiration).

The restricted section contains three unreleased songs (.mp3) and two videos (.mp4). There are also sections for Artwork, Letters, and Extra, but nothing was ever placed in them.

    Other stuff on the board:

There is a musical staff on the puzzle board, for no apparent reason. The staff is treble clef (upper register), the key of B-flat major or G minor. There are no notes on the staff - only the treble clef symbol and two flats.

There are also 7 dragonflies (6 of them with conspicuously shiny tails), and a hare. In Masquerade the animals played a very important role, remember. The hare is probably simply a homage to Jack Hare and nothing more.

You guys should buy this so I'll have someone to talk to. It's worth it, I swear!

The empty staff may be a hint that we need to somehow fill the staff with notes as a stepping stone to the solution.
