    Default Helfa Gelf

    Treasure Hunt - Wales UK

    http://www.helfagelf.org/treasure/

Helfa Gelf is a treasure hunt! Not only can you discover Conwy's hidden gems, the artists working within the county's beautiful landscape, but you can also follow a series of clues to discover actual treasure buried somewhere in the county.

The clues are hidden in the Helfa Gelf Treasure Book (request one via our contact page), on the web-site, in the artists' studios themselves and other special places. Solve the clues and reveal the treasure's secret location. The first to dig it up, keeps it!

Five beautiful gold rings have been made by five of the UK's leading jewellers: Bryan Illsley, Nina Bukvic, Catherine Mannheim, Michael Carberry and Tina Engel. Each ring is held in a beautiful porcelain 'clam-shell' casket specially hand-crafted by Sophie Lowe, one of Conwy's own international ceramicists.

The clues have been devised by Phil Brown, well known to many as cryptic crossword compiler for various North Wales newspapers. However, you don't need to be a crossword specialist to solve this conundrum, no specialist training required just a good mixture of dedication, perspiration and inspiration. Anyone can have a go and it should be great fun.

The hunt has been developed over many months in the greatest of secrecy. Only Phil and one independent witness knows where the treasure is buried. Only Phil holds the answers to the clues and, in fact, only Phil knows where all the clues are! All of us in the Helfa Gelf team are as in the dark as you on this, but we're not allowed to participate so get clue-solving - we've been in suspense for months already!

I signed up for this hunt and got my book today. Any one else out there taking a stab at this thing?

Hard to describe the book and even harder to figure out what and where the clues are. Let's start posting ideas if anyone else is working on it.

This seems obviously to be the main body of the clue:

"Seekers of treasure by water or land
Endeavour to follow the clues to hand
Visions from past and the present inspire
Earth, wood and water, shining without fire
Now follow the rainbows, though not for gold
But a prize full worthy of tales of old
Yielding fine art and mayhap something more
Studios open their doors by the score
Each may offer a full palette of hues
Veracious? That's for the solver to choose
Expect to be stumped by false trails or none
No trickery, though, when true answer's won

Good luck to seekers of beauty concealed
Ride on, persist and the answer will yield
In many forms hunted, it sheds its disguise
Duly enlightened, you come to the prize."

For starters, the clue poem is an acrostic spelling SEVEN BY SEVEN GRID. Echoes of A Treasure's Trove?
"...it may well be doubted whether human ingenuity can construct an enigma of the kind which human ingenuity may not, by proper application, resolve."

Just requested mine! Sounds pretty fun. Plus the book is free, can't beat that.

ties in nicely with another part of instructions that say:

"each clue has a symbolic instruction on precisely where that letter appears in the full solution - which has a number of letters associated with a famous gold rush!"

Glad to have you on board Net and Papa. Sorry I really cant explain it while you are waiting for your books tho. You will understand once you get them. Hard to just find the clues....much less explain them.

Since some of the clues are "...in the artists' studios themselves and other special places" doesn't that kind of rule out anyone who is not local from solving this one?

no. every artist in the book (i think all of them) have a website to visit. I am pretty sure that is what they are referring to.
