    Default Tunnels of Zürich

There is a section on greengecko’s forum (http://grngecko.com/phpBB2/index.php) titled Tunnels of Zürich.

From "Tunnels of Zürich": Entrance Portal: Where does the mystery begin?

still round the corner there may wait
a new road or a secret gate,
and though i oft have passed them by,
a day will come at last when i
shall take the hidden paths that run
west of the moon, east of the sun.
The poem is from the last chapter of The Return of the King. Frodo sings this version of the walking song while on the way to the Grey Havens.

These lines may refer to Vathek, a Gothic novel written by William Thomas Beckford. Both lines are found with exact wording in the Vathek Wikipedia article. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vathek

The next day, he discovers that the merchant has escaped and his guards cannot account for him. The people begin to call Vathek crazy. His mother, Carathis, tells him that the merchant was "the one talked about in the prophecy", and Vathek admits that he should have treated the stranger kindly.

    The image is carathis.jpg.

Also, in the box below the Google logo, if you press enter instead of clicking on the search button, you get a "?pswd=<your entry>" added to the URL. It would appear to be the password mechanism.

And, for anyone who is interested, the book can be viewed from Google Book Search.
You can also get it in pdf form (5.3 MB) Vathek pdf

GG quothe nietzsche: "HOPE is the word of evils, for it prolongs the torment of man".

from Vathek: "the most precious gift of heaven - HOPE"

The coordinates from the Child's Play geocache GC1002C are in Mt HOPE State Recreation Area.

If you google GC1002C, the only thing you find is item number GC1002C on sheetmusicplus.com, sheet music published by HOPE Publishing Co. Gotta be a very freaky coincidence, and I just had to post it here. (:

I found the origins of the image of the guardian. It from a mausoleum in Père Lachaise cemetery, notably that of Lagarde-Gueret.

Now, where have I heard that cemetery before?

I sent an e-mail enquiring as to Tunnels of Zurich. I received the following:

"Distance and time are not absolute but instead are affected by one's motion.

    - Joh. Trit."

This came from Johannes Trithemius, a late 15th century abbot and occultist. I performed a little search and found a wiki page on him and his real name, Johannes Heidelburg. I replied, referring to his real name and received a further e-mail:

    "To Whom It May Concern,

Due to dire circumstances I am forced to extend my sabbatical until
    further notice.

    - Joh. Trit.

    Johannes Virdung de Hassfurt,

I interrupt my sabbatical with extreme urgency. It is of dire
consequence that I share with you my recent findings concerning the
demise our trusted messenger. For I have in my possession an encrypted
message which I fear may contain a journal of the last days. I have
studied the cyphers intently and now believe I am on the verge of
determining the proper solutions. Vide et credere. I request that you
review my notes and offer your judgment.

As we have long suspected there are mysterious strangers who seek the
message to benefit their own worldly deeds. The cypher must remain sub
    rosa.

Worry not for I have concealed my scripts in a manner no one would
ever suspect. The contents are well protected by that charlatan and
impostor who dared to call himself fons necromanticorum, astrologus,
magus secundus chyromanticus agromanticus pyromanticus in hydra arte
    secundus.

You must act with haste for I fear the strangers draw nearer with each
    passing day.

    Salve sis

    --
    - Joh. Trit."

No doubt, we are the strangers! :P

Past the splash page on www.grngecko.com is a leather bound book. Navigating this book (by clicking the right hand and left hand sides of the open book) shows a couple of pages with links to deaddrop.cc, along with a link to a cipher program (perhaps to help us this time) and a cipher (which players of In From The Cold will recognise). It seems to be a VIC cipher, though I would have no idea where to start.

I should also point out that Johannes Trithemius, along with Johannes Virdung von Hassfurt (according to history) are two characters involved in the story of Faust. That might help us later on.

I was navigating the book, and there also is a link to a Caesar shift program, and an Enigma program. Also two links to a page that displays a random sentence, like Wait for the Signal, or You Forgot. If you click the sentence, you get to the deaddrop.cc entrance portal with the password.

There is a number code on the last page. Is this the VIC you mentioned?

It is, though if memory serves, the cipher classics program does have a cipher that uses 5-digit blocks of ciphertext, so perhaps it isn't!

Taking another look at it and comparing it to the Cipher classics, there's every chance that it's a straddling checkerboard cipher. Taking the numbers, all we would need is a "checkerboard key", which would be a word (or words) with 10 or more letters total. I've tried a few obvious ones such as names and real names, but I've had no luck so far.

    Default Random thoughts

After several months on and off of working on the blocks and failure (entertaining failure at points but failure nontheless) I figured I'd try this for a weekend.

A few things I've tried I think are deadends that might be handy to someone.

    1) There is a freeware encryption tool on the web named Faust. It also converts characters in text documents into numbers. Unfortunately those seem to be 8-9 number strings and I've yet to be able to format those 125 numbers into anything that I can get something decrypted out of. Also, you need a password and perhaps I've just been guessing bad ones.

I was a bit excited as I assumed "The contents are well protected by that charlatan and
impostor " were actually saying "I encrypted it with Faust", but as I said, no luck so far making it work.

    2) The name Carathis appears in one Edgar Allen Poe story, the Premature Burial. Given Grngecko's frequent use of Poe, I thought this might be significant, perhaps a book cipher, but so far I can't make heads or tails of it.

The quote comes from the last paragraph of the last page of the story.

The Best of Poe Text - The Premature Burial - Page 5

    3) Both Vathek and Faust are discussed in a paper titled Supernatural Horror in Literature written by HP Lovecraft. This seems to have absolutely no relevance to the puzzle, I just found it an amusing read. Carathis has a brief mention in it also.

    It can be found here

    LOVECRAFT -SUPERNATURAL HORROR IN LITERATURE

    4) While hitting 'enter' on the xit.html page does get you to see the pwd in the URL, it doesn't seem to actually submit the page, at least in chrome or IE testing I've done. I'm pretty sure you need to click the 'search' button in order to get the redirect to work. So if you've entered a lot of good guesses and hit 'enter' after them, I'd say try those again by using the 'search' button after each one.

    5) Interesting patterns of references. The 'journal' is supposedly of the last days. Deaddrop.cc is an obvious nod to hell.com. Both Faust and Vathek are stories about hell in some way. There's definitely a theme here in the clues.

    6) I find it interesting that the clue of the images name, Carathis, and the quote on the grngecko forums are references to Vathek, but the email that was sent out was so clearly a reference to Faust. I'm not sure if the only point of Vathek references were to lead us to Faust, or Faust is a parallel hint at the same end goal in the similarities of the stories.

Maybe someday something here will be of use, but if not at least I stopped it all from rambling around in my head for 5 minutes by writing it out.

And now I'll get back to work on checkerboards. I wrote a program to just brute force all 3,628,800 keys on the numbers, but I haven't found anything useful out of that yet. Just a whole lot of gibberish.
