    Default MASQUERADE-Kit Williams Radio Interview

Don't miss this! According to the BBC website, this program is only going to be available online for the next 5 days.

On July 14, BBC Radio aired a special in honor of Masquerade's 30th anniversary. There are new interviews with the author, Kit Williams, who hasn't spoken publicly about the hunt in years, and the publisher of the book, Tom Maschler.

There are also some very funny interviews with several treasure hunters who, at the time, had been absolutely convinced of their totally off the mark solutions. The BBC also spoke to the 2 men who actually solved the puzzle first, but missed digging up the treasure by one day. (Warning: the solution is included in the program.)

    Listen to it here:
BBC - BBC Radio 4 Programmes - The Grand Masquerade

    Newspaper Article:
Gloucestershire author Kit Williams, who sparked a worldwide treasure hunt with his Masquerade picture book, is appealing for the owner of the golden hare to come forward.

If you are not familiar with Masquerade, this wonderful website will explain it all:

Just wanted to add another good website for information about the original Masquerade, for those interested, but unfamiliar with the book. The images of the book's pages are larger here.

I didn't make a copy and now I'm regretting it. Sorry, Cthree.

Maybe someone at Q4T saved it?

    Default Miss- Quote

Hi Maskit, thanks for the links to kits radio 4 programme.

But have to point out a miss-quote, the link to TheGloucstershire news. The item of news states that Kit Williams was quoted as saying; "Speaking on BBC Radio 4, the Gloucest- ershire-based artist said: "If I could appeal to whoever has it... if they could release it to a museum where we could all see it."

I have replayed the radio 4 programme and the quote came not from kit but from one of the two teachers who solved Masquerade( Mike Baker ).
If your able to replay it back listen at 25mins 40sec, this is the Mike Baker quote.

The sad thing is its also been miss quoted by ABE books, who copied the miss quote from TheGloucestershire news.

If you could let other's know by leaving your link up, but ask anyone who visits TheGloucestershire news to leave a comment at the foot of the news item, then maybe they will correct it.

    Regards Underhilll

    Hi Underhill,

Thanks for bringing this up. Yes, I noticed that error right away, too. In the program, it is not Kit Williams asking for the return of the jewel for public display, but one of the puzzle solvers.

Then, I saw the following news article where Kit Williams is quoted as having spoken to the paper directly.

Mysterious golden hare still casting its spell 30 years on - News, Books - The Independent

"He has added his voice to mounting calls for the owner of the amulet to reveal themselves and allow the hare to go on public display. "I don't think it is in the country... I suspect it has gone for ever," the artist told The Independent yesterday."

So, it made it sound like he was in agreement with Mike Barker, but I wonder if the Independent is a reliable source?

Here is the link to a story mentioned in Underhill's post. Due to the radio broadcast, Masquerade has suddenly become a bestseller on abebooks!
