Default The Aran Islands Treasure Hunt

    Afternoon all,

Just came across the Aran Islands Treasure Hunt today.

From what I've read you have to decode Captain O'Connolly's lost memoires in order to locate a key and win EUR 10,000.

According to the rules & regs the competition is open to anyone, any age. The competition started on Friday 4th September and runs until March 8th 2010. Winners will be announed on or around 17th March 2010, St Patrick's Day.

    1st prize is EUR 10,000
2nd prize is a luxury two night stay at the Aran Islands Hotel
3rd prize is a EUR 250 voucher towards a stay at the Aran Islands Hotel

They also go on to say that the Hunt is an initiative to increase awareness and visit to the Aran Islands. The Treasure Hunt is supported by the Aran Islands Hotel, Kilronan, Inis Mor. Ireland (the website for which I've found at Aran Islands Hotel)

The entry fee is EUR 12.50 for which you receive a copy of the memoirs and get a unique code which will enable you to play the competition online at www.arantreasure.com.

Writerian, are you actually doing this hunt? Did you want to compare ideas?

I joined this hunt -although it looks a bit like a new twist on a time share campaign.

    Looks interesting anyway....

    Hi Ace,

Yes, I've joined the hunt. Sailed through the Morse Code at a great rate of knots (which made me laugh) and there I weighed anchor!

I've trawled through all the ciphers I know but I'm still none the wiser!

Looks like this is gonna be an interesting hunt ;o)

I have a tentative list of places and an idea on how to pull the letters needed, but haven't had any free time to test it yet. I'll let you know if anything gels.

    Hi Guys,

Have to admit I'm not making headway on that front. As I understand it:

    Step 1
Establish the order in which the places were visited.
On the face of it this seem straightforward enough, albeit there's a bit of 'guesswork' involved filling in the blanks so to speak.

    Step 2
Find the code between each place to ascertain the letter from each place that we need. Again this seems straightforward enough.

However, step 2 instructions lead me to believe that we shouldn't need to rearrange anything, i.e. the first code should give us the letter that needs to be extracted from the first place and so on. Kind of a double check that we have the right places in the right order.

This is the bit I'm puzzling over at the moment. I've read the memoirs that many times I could probably recite them and each time I get the same set of places. But the order in which I have the places and the running order of the letters are not always matching up. For example I have a Y in position 21 but not in the 21st place visited.

No matter how I look at it I can't figure out where I might have taken a wrong turn along the route. Do you have this same problem?
