When Mulligan says he has the "Code of all codes" I thought perhaps this was alt codes. But nothing stands out. Then I started thinking about the foot. Footnotes? Foot code. Many wiki pages have footnotes and pertain to the hunt. But still, nothing stands out.

one random thought... his "code of all codes" involves taking a crayon and tracing a footstep. One meaning of "code" is "set of rules", and they suggest they use "codes" as "clues", then the "rule that applies to all of the clues" is that all of the clues that lead to the treasure involve tracing footsteps, meaning that we shouldn't be driving or taking public transportation.
A funeral can be real fun if you mix it up a bit

I had assumed it was only symbolic of "retracing your steps" but who knows.
