U.S. Dept. of the Treasury? It uses a scale in it's emblem.

I have an idea about the “hint of riches new and old”. ff could be using the word “riches” to say a “return” on your investment. “New and old” could pertain to “young and mature”. My idea is that this is a hint about the Saturn Return, an astrological concept that the position of Saturn influences a person at birth and returns 29.5 years later to represent the quintessential time when a person would “choose their path” in life.

I think this Saturn Return idea is a step towards interpreting the birthstone of the 9th month, that is the sapphire.

just a side note, I have no real basis for suggesting an astrological perspective. It's certainly not my preferred interest. I only thought of the Saturn Return idea as alternative to what has been presented so far.

When I count every letter including spaces in the poem preceding the words "Begin it...", I get 114 or "113." It could be a method for conveying a whole number or degree of longitude that limits our search from a massive span to just around 50 miles.

Rye Creek Road looks interesting. Being a road with the name of a creek it's certainly something that you won't paddle up.

Stealths post was enjoyable to read. It deserves lots of criticism and praise for effort. Its all about the process, which amounts to a heap of assumptions that have become more and more familiar.

The text formatting and wordsearch maneuvers tug at our instinct to accept as intended, but I know all to well the power of coincidence. The sea is large, and there is no limit to the crafty ways we can build a "raft".

erexere, What advice would you give to someone involved in f's hunt that has little experience with the usual puzzle techniques? You're not going so far as to say it's solely intended to be a geographical solve, are you?

What do you mean by "solely geographical"? Is that saying the poem is just landmark-to-landmark description without any effort to conceal a secret message?

I'm no expert and I sure haven't been successful on any arm chair hunts. All I have is a lot of experience trying lots of ideas that always look silly in retrospect.

As for giving advice, I would encourage people to look most carefully at their first interpretive steps. I think each set of lines achieves one specific task. I think his puzzle is a lot like a sudoku. There's a lot of blanks to fill in. The moment you fill in one of the blanks with certainty, you will have something key to filling in the next blank. It's incredibly nuanced and it's difficult to know which words apply directly to a setting or work abstractly for the purpose of their stanza.
