The word, "cimarron" means, "wild", which could be "no place for the meek".

Some other ideas I have include these...There are some hot springs around northern NM. Could these hot springs lead to rivers or streams, and be where the "warm waters halt"? Also, Fenn was a collector of art. He probably would have loved Taos, and probably visited there to purchase art. Therefore, he would be familiar with the Taos area. Another artsy area is Abiquiu, where Georgia O'Keefe was from.

The problem with this hunt, is that there are just too many possibilities. A poem makes for many interpretations. Also, the clues are too vague. This will be difficult to find until someone can piece several of the clues together.Only then will it begin to make some sense.

This has tweaked my interest a little since I used to live in NM and am now just a few hours from Northern NM (hint hint - I come with somewhat decent references).

I knew about Jemez hot springs, but that is mostly west of Santa Fe. Here is a map of NM hot springs: SwimmingHoles.info New Mexico Swimming Holes and Hot Springs rivers creek springs falls hiking camping outdoors A couple are in Taos (click the red). In that area, the Rio Grande is at the bottom of a canyon.

Caves offer the best protection (think dead sea scrolls, pre-Columbian artifacts, cave art, etc.)

He also said that after placing the cache he walked back to the car. I can't see him paddling "too far to walk", and then walking back to the car.

I think the third stanza should read:

From there it's no place for the meek (bushwhack over rough terrain, no canoe)
The end is ever drawing nigh (box canyon?)
There'll be no paddle up your creek (because it’s too shallow, no canoe)"
Just heavy loads (why plural?) and water high (waterfalls, no canoe)"
And you can see the word "cave" in the art on page 57

"Begin it where warm waters halt
And take it in the canyon down,"

Perhaps he is referring to the outflow/runoff from the hot springs, and points to the spot where those waters go back underground in a canyon below...

Is anybody headed to Santa Fe soon? If you do, let me know, please.

I have a VERY specific spot for you to look.

I've never been to Santa Fe, and I thoroughly enjoy going on these sorts of hunts. If the prize isn't claimed soon, and the weather is warming up a bit, I'm gonna go see what Santa Fe looks like.

I mentioned that the word "cimarron" means "wild". But "marron" is the Spanish word for "brown".

Doc, I think you should get on a plane. Everything is so vague with the poem, if what you have can be made into something specific that fits the poem, I would go for it! Good luck!

    Geneticblend,

Thanks for the encouragement, but the clues are vague enough that I worry they can be made to fit about anything.

However, these flow together really well. And, the hiding spot, if correct, is only about 50 ft from the highway. That was honestly unexpected from my first reading of the poem--I thought it would be in a much more rugged location.

I found the answer in a fishing manual, of all things.

Well then, I don't think 50 feet from a highway is too far to walk! I think you should keep looking.
