Hey, nobody has mentioned that the prize has been raised to $350.00. Thanks, Custard.

I absolutely know where I would be looking if I lived close enough. Unfortunately, if my theory about the area is right, I'm states and states away.

Hope someone from Tweleve finds it!

Just putting my $0.02 in for this one. I made the mistake of reading the story at 2 AM in the pitch blackness of my living room. @_@ At least I used my insomnia to my advantage; looking for clues! I have a few theories, but nothing is jumping out as a solid "solve" yet. Right now I'm paying attention to West Virginia, but of course I could be way off target.

Good luck everyone, and thanks Custard!

MM: Didn't happen to see a gray ghost walk past while you were reading the book, did you?
I'm focusing on Virginia, New Jersey, Oklahoma and Florida at the moment.

In other words, not a clue!! (Well, many clues, none of them making sense to me....)
    Good luck!

I love the story. I have an idea about where the rock might be hidden, but it is a very general idea. To find a specific rock, we would have to have some very specific clues telling us an exact spot. I can't seem to find anything or extract out anything to give me any directions or clues that are quite so specific. Of course, with a prize of $350.00 on the line, no one is going to travel just to poke around somewhere. It would be like looking for a needle in a haystack. There has to be something in the story that tells us precisely where this rock is hidden.

Has anyone figured this out, that lives across the continent from the treasure, has no intention on going to get that rock, that would be willing to give up a hint?

I started off looking at the numbers, 'cause I'm a numbers kinda guy.
There are numbers as digits as well as written out in a word.
    I found these:
12 2 five three eight ten three two 19 20 seven four seven
    (correct me if i'm wrong...)

One area that caught my eye was the only number as a price. $19.00
The next two numbers are "20 iPads" and "My eyes climbed seven..."
Could this be 1927? What does that year mean?

    Just some ideas.

I've got a lot more numbers than that. I will list them by paragraph:

PARAGRAPH ONE: 12, 2, ONE, FIVE
    PARAGRAPH FIVE: THREE
PARAGRAPH SIX:A MINUTE (COULD BE INTERPRETED AS ONE), THIRD ONE, TEN SECONDS
    PARAGRAPH SEVEN:SECOND, FIVE MINUTES
    PARAGRAPH ELEVEN: ONE
    PARAGRAPH TWELVE: THREE
PARAGRAPH THIRTEEN: MIDNIGHT (COULD BE INTERPRETED AS 12), ONE, EIGHT, TEN
    PARAGRAPH 22: FIFTEEN MINUTES
    PARAGRAPH 24: ONE
    PARAGRAPH 25: THE SECOND
PARAGRAPH 27: THREE, TWO, A THIRD
    PARAGRAPH 28: FIRST, $19.00
    PARAGRAPH 29: TWO
    PARAGRAPH 30: ELEVEN, 20, SEVEN
    PARGRAPH 31: SECOND
    PARAGRAPH 32: ONCE
PARAGRAPH 38: FOUR, NOON (COULD BE 12)
    PARAGRAPH 39: FIRST
    PARAGRAPH 40: TWO
    PARAGRAPH 46: SIXTY SECONDS
    PARAGRAPH 52: SEVEN

Of course, some of these are not "exactly" what you would call numbers. Some of the words I have listed are things like, "first" or "second" or "third one", or "noon".

What I find interesting are that a lot of these have the words "minutes" and "seconds" attached to them. And the words "midnight" and "noon" would be "hours". Hmmm...What does this sound like to you?????!!!

The one paragraph that I find extremely odd is the one about him coming up with the story about washing his feet, and the dog and the chocolate, etc... Why is that paragraph even there? It really has no purpose. Is there something hidden in it?

Another strange paragraph is the one where he describes in detail that wooden box. I thought it was going to remain a mystery--what that box really was. But on the next page, we find out that it is a blasting cap crate. So why did he go into all that detail? That paragraph must hold some important clues.

Besides numbers, there are a lot of directional words. I'm not going to list them all like I did the numbers, but some examples are FROM RIGHT TO LEFT, THE PATH IMMEDIATELY FORKED LEFT AND RIGHT, I TOOK THE STEPS DOWN, TO THE RIGHT OF, etc...

Those are some of my thoughts!

Because this is the first "quest" in what I hope will be a series, it will be especially interesting to see how this one is ultimately solved. It may help us to get inside the minds of the creators. But I think I would like to see a second quest published even before this one is solved so that we can see how different they are.

I am actually suprised that this has not been solved yet! Initially I was expecting something much easier! I am glad that it is more of a challenge, but wonder how successful these hunts will be based on the difficulty, the amount of prize money, and the fact that you have to travel to the site to collect the prize. So far, it seems well-written and designed. I am anxious to see how it plays out.

Maybe we're over-thinking the story? One of the ways I came up with my theory about which state (besides some other things) was that when I researched old blasting cap crates that looked like the one described in the story, they were from that state. There are many different designs and types of cap crates, but only so many were built as described.

I tried smooshing around with the family name, thinking it was either an anagram or just another word that means the same thing (homonym?), but didn't come up with much. The garage in the tale reminds me of my parents' garage, though. XD

I would never have thought to research old blasting cap crates. I will have to do that too and see what I come up with.
