Is anyone on here looking at the current set of questions posted? I am out of the money, but as a matter of pride want to finish the last bonus question tonight. Can anyone PM me a slight nudge in the right direction? I have been able to get all the other bonus questions, but this one has got me stuck.

Well, the first Internet Hunt of the season has ended and I am proud to declare victory! It was a hard fought battle with many folks, and I am also happy that our own GeneticBlend, PumaLion and KSteph were also in the top5. Looking forward to round 2!

Check out the cool $2 bill from 1899 and the other great historical bills that were given out as promised at historicalhunt.com!

Congrats to Steve who won the first Historical Hunt Internet Hunt! I participated too, and it was a fun hunt.

Default How does this become a Recommended Hunt?

How do we move Historical Hunt up into the "Recommended" category for Tweleve? It would be fun to have a broad field of participants for the next Internet Hunt, starting in January.

Here is some background, most of which I sent in a message to a fellow Twelever who will be joining the next Historical Hunt in January.

The Historical Hunt site has two kinds of hunts (so far). The first one I did was a "real world" hunt: clues led me to a specific location where I found a special stone and reported the unique number back to the website.

The hunt finished in December 2012 was their first Internet hunt. Approximately once a day (or sometimes skipping a day or two) questions about historical events or people would be posted on their site. Each question was assigned a point value. You had to race against other participants to enter the answer to a question because only the first person to enter the correctly spelled and formatted response would earn the points assigned. (Formatting rules are on their website. They look complicated, but you get the hang of them fairly quickly.) All answers could be found online in some way, shape or form. I made heavy use of a site called "Chronicling America" that offers old newspaper pages. Google books was the source sometimes. If you are registered on the HH site, you can go back and look at some of the old questions they asked and the answers that produced a winning response.

A few weeks into the hunt they mixed things up a bit by altering the format: a single question would be posted, and everyone could earn points for a correct answer, but the number of points you received would be randomly assigned by the computer. There was a time limit (a few hours) for the single-questions. My guess is that higher points were awarded to people who solved the question first, diminishing for each subsequent response, but I may be wrong.

It looks as if there will be more variations - "themed hunts," for instance - in the new year.

I think you are right to point out that the lack of feedback or dialogue from the Fandango authors may be a big part of why the thrill of the process is less than TCWAF. HH is also good about feedback. In the first Internet hunt, the HH site administrators had a process for filing an appeal if a participant felt he or she should get credit for a response that was rejected. I was awarded points for several questions I thought I had answered correctly but which had misspelled answers programmed into their database: for instance, an ad from an 1837 Vermont merchant was for "kid shoes." I found the ad and recognized kid as a kind of leather and entered the response. The website said my answer was incorrect and moments later awarded points to someone who entered "kids shoes." I suspect children were not even referred to as kids in 1837. I sent in an appeal, and they wrote back within hours to tell me that I would also receive points for my answer.

It was their first Internet hunt, and they worked out some bugs. They were good about more carefully phrasing the wording of questions as they went along, seeking feedback, offering incentives to participate (some "runners up" who do not earn one of the top five prizes will be allowed to retain their points going into the next hunt, starting in January) and offering chances for people to catch up - point values for each answer increased in the later weeks of the game.

I'm not sure the "Internet Hunt" is an armchair hunt, per se. It's really a googling contest, in some ways, except you learn a lot of about U.S. history as you search for information, and you get the daily ego boost of seeing yourself credited for an answer or two, and of having your score increase. I encourage you to watch for their next Internet hunt, starting in early January. It is fun.

i'm the one who received the points for "kids shoes"! I, too, appealed a few answers and received the points. It was really fun, but I don't have a chance on the next hunt as I will be leaving for Easter Island on the 26th returning in mid-February. But my "puzzling partner" here in Casper, basically dropped out, hence retaining her points...watch out for CJones!

Thanks to everyone for their feedback. We agree that having more players will make it more fun. We've already started a second advertising campaign, but can always use some help, especially here at Tweleve. We're new to this discussion board and its use, so any help / guidance will be appreciated. Our next step on this board is getting into 'Recommend Hunts" as Puma Lion suggested (Thanks Puma).

Default Historical Hunt - New Riddled Hunt now online!

    Greetings all!
Well, we decided to add a Riddled Hunt to our game. It may challenge the ‘intellectual solver’ in some of you, while the answer may come easy others. Either way, we hope you will solve it. Here’s why.
Everyone who solves it will get 100 points in their point bank. But most importantly, if 10 people solve this riddle, we will add $100 to the Internet Hunt prize pool.

Log in to the dashboard for more info, and see if you can solve the Riddled Hunt.

If you have registered yet, you can do it safely and securely here.

    Good Luck!

I solved it! With a big helping hand from my silent partner, who is also hot on the trail of the correct answer.

As shown in the formatting guide, the correct answer does not include middle initials, just first and last names.

Congratulations to the two ‘solvers’ so far, one of whom is Puma Lion. Your ability to decipher the riddle is really impressive!

Eight more solvers to go, and the prize pool will have an extra $100!

    Good Luck!
