The June 21 Land Hunt was postponed a week, so the photo and hint were posted yesterday, June 28. Anyone think they can find the location, if not the milling itself?

Living in Maine, I decided to visit my sister in Mass. on Saturday so I could be closer when the hunt opened (and to visit my sister, of course). The hunt wasn't posted until after 5:00 pm and the site was over an hour away, but we decided to give it a try because the summer days are long and we felt we had plenty of daylight. Forest Park in Springfield is a beautiful park, full of meandering waterways, water lilies, shaded areas with park benches, old stone buildings, and a number of monuments.

In my haste, I misread the park map and mistook the wrong area as King Philip's Stockade, which turned out to be another huge fenced-in monument. We kept going back to the same (wrong) place and then took a stroll around the whole park, which is quite large and has all sorts of roads leading to clearings, picnic areas, or simply dead ends. We asked a number of people if they knew where the Toto statue was and nobody had ever even heard of it, including people who had been going to the park for years. Finally it got dark, and we left empty-handed.

Once home, I used Google maps to view the area and immediately saw my mistake. King Philip's Stockade is not in the main park at all, but across the street off an unmarked road, and in a very wooded area. Needless to say, I felt pretty stupid! When I woke up the next morning, the milling # still hadn't been entered, so I decided to give it a second shot. This time, I turned down the unmarked road and immediately came to a gate. This section of the park is closed, but I could see a sign beyond the gate identifying it as King Philip's Stockade. I parked the car, walked around the gate and down a winding road that lead to a large clearing and there was Toto, shading his eyes and looking to the horizon. Yay, Toto! I found the milling in the location indicated in the photo on the Historical Hunt site. Then I had to carry this rather large rock out of the park while wrestling my dog on a leash (she was more interested in the squirrels), then across the street and through a parking lot, and I got a few puzzled looks. Once my rock (my milling) was safely in my trunk, my dog and I took a nice relaxing stroll through the park to enjoy the beautiful weather and surroundings.

I hope others will join in the next hunt, which looks like it will be in Rhode Island. I've been unsuccessful more than once, arriving minutes after the winner on one hunt, and getting sidelined by bad directions on another (I do not have a smart phone or GPS and was relying on someone on the phone). But it's always been fun and being forever curious, I enjoy learning the history associated with the sites they select.
