Thedawailey came up with an idea that may appeal to bored armchair hunters who are too far away to travel to the site of the next land hunt: Sometime before Sunday morning, come up with three potential sites that you guess HH might use as a hiding place for the milling in the upcoming Rhode Island hunt. Don't post your guesses until about noon Sunday, so everyone has a chance to do their research without being influenced by other guesses. Theda and I have both taken a run at this already, and we used different approaches and came up with completely different results. It gave me a new respect for the effort HH invests to find an interesting and accessible spot with a specific story to tell.

No prize for this, other than the person who is closest to the actual site is the virtual winner and gets bragging rights. Maybe we should offer another prize for the site voted by the forum participants as the most interesting - Theda found a good contender for that award!

I look forward to seeing your guesses!

HH got some news coverage a couple of days ago: In R.I., web-driven Historical Hunt starts Sunday | Breaking News | providencejournal.com | The Providence Journal

The HH website for the 2014 land hunts now carries this headline: DUE TO THE OVERWHELMING RESPONSE FROM THE ARTICLE IN THE PROVIDENCE JOURNAL, WE WILL BE
RELEASING A SECOND LAND HUNT IN RHODE ISLAND IN SEPTEMBER.

    Good luck, Rhode Islanders!

These are my three (pretty vague) guesses. I looked at a list of state parks in Rhode Island and picked three that look as if they have interesting historic features. I realize the milling site could be in a place open to the public that is not a state park. Here are my three guesses based on this limited amount of research:

    1. Colt State Park
    2. Brenton Point State Park
    3. Lincoln Woods State Park

None of these sites has a particularly compelling historic incident on site, as far as I can tell from the state park website. So maybe I should have started with a different approach. Initially, I googled, "historic sites Rhode Island," but I got lists of house museums - not good places to leave a big rock.

It gives me a new respect for HH. It takes some time and effort to pick a site with history, a recognizable landmark and sufficient public access. It will be interesting to see the site he picks when it is revealed at 3 p.m.

Looks like someone already found the milling in Rhode Island. Congratulations! (I'm writing this at 5:14 p.m.; the hunt began at 3 p.m.)

Default Winner must send in a photo!

I hope the finder of the Rhode Island milling (the stone inscribed with the secret code) has read all of the rules on the HH website. There is some key information on the tab labeled "The Hunts," which then leads to an "About our land hunts" page. In addition to the correct code, the winner must submit a photo of the milling stone:

    Prize Redemption
Once a milling is found, you should quickly log into HISTORICAL HUNT and enter the code into the dashboard. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT because it will ensure that you solved the hunt and are the rightful owner of the prize. This will also let other prospective hunters know to discontinue the hunt. You then have twenty-four (24) hours to send a clear image of the milling via email. THE IMAGE HAS TO BE SENT FROM THE SAME EMAIL ADDRESS THAT IS REGISTERED UNDER YOUR ACCOUNT.
