In the panel video posted early in this thread, they talked something to the effect that everything needed to solve the hunt is in the book for legal reasons. That raises the interesting question whether info with those links counts or not since they are "in the book" after all. But if one really has to follow daily posts on facebook, twitter, etc. for 12 different characters and explore the numerous fake websites created for the game, that seems pretty involved indeed.

I watched the video again and at 39:15 he talks about the puzzle. He does say that legally everything has to be contained in the book but they have the right to give additional clues in the various other mediums. Then he says the puzzle is designed so if you have access to a library you technically can read the book and use the internet at the library (for free) and you can solve the puzzle. Is that a contradiction?

What bothers me more is the answer by the puzzle designer at 31:00. "Is the puzzle complete, is it locked?" He answers "we just have to stay ahead of the people that solve it, it grows".
So the puzzle is not complete yet? If no one finds the key in 2 years the gold goes back to James Frey. I guess the correct question is can the puzzle be solved on day 1?

Thanks MDC777. Interesting indeed. Maybe it will get cleared up on release. They do say they expect someone to solve it.

    Hey Domino-
If you're reading this thread, do you have any insight you'd care to share, based on your knowledge as a hunt creator, about the "it has to be in the book" legal issues?

The social media aspect seems like it could be very time-consuming, if required.

    From the Sampler "Author's Note":
"Endgame is more than just a novel - it invites you to join a worldwide, puzzle-based scavenger hunt for three hidden keys. Each Endgame book will feature a "super puzzle" comprised of clues and riddles layered into the text, some of which will take you into the internet, some into the real world, some into social media, and some into your own mind. ... designed by three MIT PhD's .... One of "The Treasure of Camelot's" authors was a website designer. And their (one, single) website was hacked over and over again until it finally (and sadly) put an end to the game. Endgame's puzzles and riddles and such may be designed by MIT PhDs, but let's hope that their websites can withstand the hackers out there. Camelot's prize was $40,000, a measly amount when compared with a $500,000 prize. I expect hackers will be out in droves for this one... And if these internet sites and social media sites, and fake sites, and twitter sites and facebook sites, are required for us treasure hunters to solve something, get hacked, just think what a huge mess that will be! We won't know which sites are real clues and which are not. Some sites might be up and running and some may disappear (like Camelot did every now and then).

I almost hate to admit that I am purchasing the Endgame book. I dislike James Frey. And with so much media involved, I don't know how this could successfully work. It seems like a disaster waiting to happen. I am also dismayed at the recent failure of Camelot. But I've been sucked in. I am after all, hooked to armchair treasure hunts, and I've just got to see how this one works.

I too am buying the book the day it comes out (2 actually) and James Frey will be in my city to do a book signing a couple weeks later. I think i'm going to ask him how comfortable he feels with having the puzzle in his book designed by someone else and him not knowing the solution (he said he paid for the gold out of his own pocket).

After giving it some thought I believe Matts response was about the game aspect not the puzzle solution. In the video Frey says the solution is known to 3 people one of them being a lawyer and it is locked in his safe so when the hunt is over they can show the puzzle was legit. That makes me feel better.

Any thought to this book being put into the "recommended hunts" section? It seems we could have a ton of discussion on the various aspects of the game/hunt.

Book Buzz: James Frey's 'Endgame' has a golden prize

The gold coins are going to be on display at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

......I won't have far to go to claim it

I will probably lurk to see what sort of puzzles crop up, but I am definitely not going to buy the book or jump on the hype bandwagon. My friends in a chat room brought up some of the language in the rules and disclaimers about the contest, for example:

    * "You expressly agree not to make public, regardless of the medium, what you believe to be a correct or incorrect solution to any of the puzzles (or portions thereof) included in the Contest." ...also there is a section about using online forums and if they don't conform to the rules of the game that you may be disqualified.

    * "The Sponsor reserves the right to modify, delay, or terminate the Contest in the event solutions are made public or otherwise shared, or if the Contest becomes compromised or corrupted in any way."

My friends then proceeded to look at the javascript currently "hiding" the images on the event countdown page, and found the direct URLs to see the final reveals. (However, they did not unlock the scrambled video on that page.) I won't put your status in jeopardy by posting those URLs here --- but if you figure out *****_1.jpg you can probably guess how to find 8 more.
