    Default The Black Watchmen

not a treasure hunt but for puzzle lovers it looks interesting...

The Black Watchmen | Permanent Alternate Reality Game

The Black Watchmen storyline is an evolving, user-influenced narrative. In fact, the game's content is produced as a direct result of the players and their actions. Simply playing the game, you are directly impacting the direction of the game's development. Unlike past ARGs, The Black Watchmen is not tied to promoting a product, so the story can progress in any way imaginable.
Whether you are an experienced player or a novice, you can take part in The Black Watchmen. You will be asked to follow leads, scrutinize newly discovered evidence and search for the breakthrough that will solve the mission. The possibilities are endless; but beware, any piece of information, however innocuous, could be part of the game - and every action has its consequence.
A traditional video game has clear parameters: it is played on a screen and exists exclusively within that space. An ARG uses the real world as the game world, blurring the lines between fiction and reality, turning everyday interactions into game mechanics.
The game is played on coded websites, newspaper ads, phone calls, text messages, and in real-world locations. Embedded on as many media outlets, in as many parts of the world as possible, the puzzles can only be solved through the collaboration of the community. We have created an interface that acts as a mission hub, while offering players various means of communicate with one another. Whether you’re an experienced player or an ARG newbie, your presence and your knowledge will be needed in order to complete the different quests within The Black Watchmen.
As players who took part in the previous two Secret World ARGs might say, this is not a game to be played, this is a new reality to be explored; an alternate reality to be experienced

    Background:
I did not play this when it was launched, but I was aware of it from its early days on Unfiction. My understanding at the time was that it itself was not the permanent ARG, but a pre-ARG to help create the "PARG" as described over there in View topic - The Black Watchmen Project
That thread speaks of the project in the past tense. The pledge links in that thread now point to a "sign up for Beta" promo, so I'm not sure if that's a new state of affairs. The last post points to an article from early 2014 which says:
You might be surprised to hear that the current ARG that is underway is not the persistent one. In fact, it is just a bonus!
*That* article has a link to a game screen which appears to have all missions complete, plus a link to sign up for a beta test.

The most recent thread I found is from early this year, when the game was still under development.
    View topic - PARG

Your link does say it became a successful launch. I should let Unfiction know this.

They are selling the game on Steam. From what I gather you have to pay for each season but on this link it says if you purchase before the end of Sept you get season 1 and 2.

ah, I don't use Steam. The article I mentioned above was on "Massively" and the link was on page one of a thread I didn't read to the end -- I realized it when I posted my reply there. I'm surprised there was never any further discussion of the game, especially if it truly cannot be played alone (as it says somewhere on the Steam site). I guess the activity moved from Unfiction to their in-game forums.
