Default Historical Hunt - 2016 Internet Hunts

Our 2016 Internet Hunts will begin on January 24th!

It will start with the release of our first Themed Hunt, so there is no rush in logging in. Players can go at their own pace with these hunts. We'll then release our other Internet Hunts as the game progresses.

Good Luck to all our players!

Hi, guys. Please don't hate me.

I was on Facebook on Sunday afternoon and saw a post from HH saying that "Original Hunt" questions had just been released. I went right to the dashboard, clicked on the "original hunt" questions and started answering as many of the questions as I could. I was almost done with the list when I realized that the questions weren't just disappearing from my view as I answered, but were "closed to all when answered correctly." So it ended up being a (very fun) one-person hunt, apparently.

In the past, HH has given a few days or hours' notice if a new batch of questions is going to be released. This time I guess he wanted to test how many people were paying attention to his FB posts.

In case anyone wants to practice finding answers to questions from the practice "original hunts" category, these are the ones I recall:

He seemed to be encouraging the use of a range of resources and types of questions, promoting the use of varied internet sites. Point values ranged from 10 to 50 points per question, I think.

He asked for the name of the Library of Congress historical newspaper search site and then had the

    "Heritage _____ " question.

The number in the name of the cemetery from the 2015 Rhode Island hunt.

The number of non-slave people living in the U.S. in (I believe) 1810. Maybe it was 1830?

The name of an accused witch executed in Salem on July 19, 1692.

A state with a number in its name.

State that has produced the most Presidents.

Full name of the Alcatraz inmate known as "Creepy".

Those are the only ones I can recall right now. I may be able to think of others later.

Puma, I saw that you had gotten some extra points, then I searched for the questions. I couldn't find any. It was only then that I realized what HH had done WAS like the original hunts and closed the questions to everyone once a correct answer was given. You deserve the points because you were the one who was paying attention! That was what was so fun...and addicting...about those original hunts. You never knew when new questions would be posted. It could be any time day or night. It kept you on your toes. It would be a real race if more than one player was on line and answering at the same time. Awesome fun! I hope I can be there the next time it happens!

I agree - I completely missed this one. Kudos Puma Lion for being on your Historical Hunt toes! A reminder to the rest of us that we have to start paying attention

I think the questions for this current hunt are much more difficult than last season. I am curious as to what question people think was either the most difficult and/or aggravating (whether you already have it answered or not...although I think you can put a better perspective on it if you have already answered it correctly).

Of those I've answered, I would say "Jeptha" was the most difficult for me.

I still have some that are unanswered, so the "Jeptha" question might lose its place in my personal ranking. Of those that I still have unanswered, Captain Kidd's 1st Mate has been hanging in there from the get-go, and I would love to find the answer for that one. And the Hawaii one is getting quite annoying.

What are everyone else's ideas on the most difficult questions? (Without revealing any answers, of course!)

Those were all tough. The juror who committed suicide was tricky. I spent a lot of time on Isaac D. Brown, or whatever the name was, before the question was revised. The witness in the Philadelphia murder threw me for quite a loop. HH has been doing a lot of work these past few months!

I can tell you most of the questions have me beat. I've attempted some long research strategies that haven't paid off. Evidently some of the participants are really excellent researchers! Good job people. *hat tip*

Musicman, I attempted to answer the private messages that you sent me privately, but your mailbox is full. So to answer your questions, I will do so here. No, sorry, I do not want to trade answers with you.

GB, my inbox stays full! lol I don't like to delete messages, its an OCD thing I guess! I just thought I would lend a helping hand, since I got that first mate one right off the bat, and the Hawaii one, I figured maybe you would have liked to trade HINTS to the answers, I never asked to trade ANSWERS, since I had been struggling with some of them as well. But, I see that you suddenly got the rest of them not even 6 hours after that post, so great job! I'm still slugging a long for now lol Thank you for at least attempting to reply to me! And to answer your previous post, the hardest one for me so far, is the Soule Cemetery one, I have gone through over 400 newspaper clippings and only found 2 papers with the date April 9, 1828 and that cemetery isn't mentioned in any of them! lol congrats on the challenge HH!

If you haven't tried Historical Hunt's online hunt, you can still easily catch up to the frontrunners! HH has designed the hunt this year so that the pack cannot move forward unless or until stragglers and newcomers help to reach a collective threshold. There is a "Simple Explorations" category that is all pretty easy and seems designed to introduce you to various types of questions, formatting of answers (explained in links on the HH website) and sites that will come in handy when you seek answers online. (Hint: I have recommended the Smithsonian's historical newspaper collection, Chronicling America, in past years.) Then you can try your luck and skill in the Cemetery category. There are a few relatively easy questions but a number of tough ones to force you to discover new websites and new ways of googling.

Feel free to ask questions here if you want to know more about how the Internet hunt works, or about past hunts. People probably won't share information here that leads to specific answers, but there is a nice collective spirit that welcomes newcomers to the hunts.

We need just 232 more questions (out of 1400) answered to "unlock" the next round of questions in the "Themed Hunts" category. Can you help?
