    Default Blue Nile White Nile

This illustration also exists on the cover. Normally, I would doubt any real clues are on an image that is used as cover artwork because the image is shown for free on the Internet. As a puzzle maker, I would not put solvable puzzles on a cover image that is free to view.

    But, you never know.

The orientation of the pyramids, the Sphinx, and the Nile are all wrong. If you face the Sphinx, the Nile is behind you, not in front of you as pictured.

Assuming the time of day is sunset because of the border text that says "The Sun Set Over The Empire", we are facing SW with the fading light to our right and the constellation Orion to our left. In this orientation, the pyramids go in approximately the correct direction, but there is something wrong about them.

On the one hand, Khufu's pyramid, the largest of the three, is pictured between Khafre's and Menkaure's. This is incorrect, it is the other way around. Khufu's pyramid should be closest to the Sphinx. On the other hand, he clearly pictures the three small pyramids of Khufu's wives in front of the foremost pyramid. So, perhaps he did draw them in the correct order, he just got the details of the drawing wrong.

Most people get this wrong, even documentaries on TV. The largest pyramid, that of Khufu, is not the one with the distinctive cap which still contains some of it's smooth limestone casing. This one is Khafre's and sits between the other two.

Or, perhaps the 3 tiny pyramids are the Pyramids of Queens. These are next to Menkaure's. Any way you slice it, it is all messed up.

I think the fish might be a Jesus fish referring to the West Bank. Also looks like a bomb or a goldfish cracker. But the West Bank is quite some distance from Cairo.

The number grid and the fish are interesting.

    The grid is numbered with elements: Sb=antimony, Ni=nickel, 9=Flourine, 49=Indium, 102=Nobelium, 99=Einsteinium, 1 (sideways)=hydrogen, 53=Iodine.

If you take the letters of these< sb ni f in no es h i, they spell out (when anagrammed) Fish is on Benin.

Well this is obviously a lie, since Benin, though part of the African continent, is several thousand miles to the southeast of Egypt, where the pyramids are. Yet, the same man explored both: Sir Richard Burton. Yet, that's also not very impressive, considering he explored quite a bit of Africa.

And as Rusty says, the orientation is incorrect. The pyramid with the cap ought to be in the middle of the three larger ones, and the Nile would not be where it is. However, the center of the picture is facing almost due west, not southwest. The Sphinx faces almost due east.

I'm still trying to make something out of the 'earthworks' pictured--the mounds that resemble Ls.

Precession (in the text poem) is referring, I'm assuming, to the Precession of the Equinoxes--which would place Orion in a different place in, oh, say 27000 years or so. So it's conceivable he could appear in the Western sky at that point...

The Nile 'flowing by just like the Milky way' leads me to believe it actually IS the Milky Way--not a river. It's shaped much like the Milky Way in star charts.

Perhaps the ground layout is actually the sky layout?

Not that it matters, but you are only facing west if you take the Sphinx as being drawn in a correct orientation. I said southwest because the sunset is off the canvas to the right. But that could be inaccurate also.

I checked out the orientation on Google Earth--the satellite pic is almost identical with the painting, except for size and those odd earthworks--and the pyramids being reversed. And the Nile.

There is one place where the Nile would actually be in the same orientation--not the same place, but the east-west orientation--and that is near the "bend" about in the middle. The river makes a U-shaped bend that takes the stream from west to east and back to west again until it continues its normal N-S course.

But....I don't know if the orientation is more important or the actual directions.
