    Default Grandpa Thrifty's puzzle hunt

Okay, here's a couple of new ones for you. This is a puzzle hunt available for Kindle--It was only $2.99 so I bought it. And it's a good one! Very short, cute story about a squirrel and libraries. But there are some really puzzling things in it.

First, there is an acrostic. This squirrel likes words, so there is a word list:

    UMLAUT
    SASQUATCH
    ENERVATE
    ALGONQUIN
    GYPSUM
    PERRISODACTYL
    STARLIGHT
    OBNUBILATE
    KELP

which, if you take the initial letters, spells out "use a GPS OK". The final letters spell out "THEN M L T E P". Not sure if that's part of it.

I'm having trouble with the following. I think it may be a cryptogram, but none of the online crypto solvers have come up with much. See if you can:

RAVSTA LDUKA ORUUAR KSFIRU DURIN DURFHOA. RTLOU RUE EBIRT NE-SFAKBORIT.

    Help me out here 12ers!!

Hey, guys---I need some help with this one! I have rethought the "cryptogram" and I now do not think it IS a cryptogram. I think it's some other type of puzzle. There are little letters all over the book in the illustrations--maybe these need to be added to the ones in the string below?

Have you considered the surrounding text that implies the clue is in an "interesting language"?

Yes, and the most interesting language in the book is ENGLISH. It's all about that, actually--interesting English words, English and American history--so I'm pretty well convinced this is not a foreign language, but English in some way. There are two more anacrostics in the book--the one I already posted, and another one that spells "MAP" and a third that anagrams to A DREAM--but that could be something else, too. So what are you thinking?

I have just received a FREE gift from the Grandpa Thrifty hunt...Stanford Squirrel just emailed me a FREE COPY of the book for Kindle! If you have a Kindle and an Amazon account, you can PM me and I will send you the link so you can get it. How generous!

I just bought it yesterday, so I haven't had a great deal of time to work on it. There may be another anacrostic with the states, but I think there are probably too many already, and the potential solutions are weak. For example, the one you say is possibly A DREAM doesn't provide much in the way of help, but if you use the place it anagrams to it might (although I doubt it based on the expected form of the solution).

I've been spending too long trying to decide if something I found is a red herring. So I haven't given much thought to the language puzzle. I'm certainly not at a point where I would rule out a foreign language.

The states aren't an acrostic, they are an anagram. It does form a coherent sentence if you use all the two-letter abbreviations.

Hey, Molnar, if you want, I've formed a circle on Google+ to discuss and share hints. If you're not on Google+ I can send you an invitation if you have a gmail address.

Thanks for the invite, but I avoid social network sites like the plague.

I'll have to take your word for the states. If the intention is a 16-letter anagram, that isn't instilling me with much confidence in the setter. Too many possibilities, unless there is other information to constrain the solution.

    It's not a single 16-letter word.
