Chp 9 is called The Jewelry Box
Pg 48 tells us how his workshop is in orderly array:

It talks about the timbering tools he hadn't used in months.

It tells us that the area where he USED to stack wood remained empty.

It tells us how his father had taught him the craft, and explains the uses of tools for types of wood.

Interesting to me is pg 49:

Zac stripped the bark from the edges of the birch limb and split it. The two perfectly matched halves would complete the top of Ana's JEWEL BOX. He was hunched over, planing the wood smooth, when the embassy of Forest Creatures, led by Ladybug arrived and PERCHED ON a BRANCH IN the workshop.
After reminding the others to behave, Ladybug HOPPED IN AND LANDED on the end of the workbench....

Out of the corner of his eye, Zac noticed the tiny creature. Since HE HAD SEEN FEW LIVING THINGS, even insects, in this part of the forest for some time....

    Questions:
Is it a jewelry box or a jewel box?
What embassy of Forest Creatures perch? Only the (6) flying ones?
What branch is IN the workshop.
Where did ladybuy hop? and land?
If he had seen few living things, does that include trees? Pook? Ana?

My thought on fairies is that they are characters in this story, and may actually "portray" some of the Forest Creatures. Therefore, being both the ones who's hiding places are pressed into their hands, and the living mates whom Zac puts into the box.

Another thing.... remembering that this whole story timeline may be confusing.
Ana and Pook are sleeping while Zac works here, maybe some of the story is only their dreams.

I know... more thinks to laugh at, shake your head at, or think about..... <g>

    Hmmmmmm......Maybe......the bibloba in Wisconsin???

Found a reference to perching on page 34. Grasshopper perched on hummingbirds back. I agree that only the flying one's perch.

As to the branch in the workshop. Further down it says ladybug turned to the group in the widow. Sounds like one of Yorah's branches. Always wondered about pg. 41. Are we seeing this through the window or are the branches extending into the house?

I can see I have to do alot more thinking about this. All those tree sites really boggled my mind.

Debz - very good insight on the jewelry box vs. jewel box. I see your point. Your theory sounds like a good one.

I'm sure it's the gingko in Wis.
