Good Fenix wonders if nightowl could elaborate on these mysterious ciphers...
A good source for a bunch of paper and pencil class ciphers is the American Cryptogram Association. They're at www.cryptogram.org. Linked from their
site is the Crypto dropbox. In particular, Chapter 8 of The ACA and You is very handy and describes Checkerboard and its variants. http://www.und.nodak.edu/org/crypto/crypto/.chap08.html
Also note how each cipher has a recommended length which is a rough indicator of the difficulty.

Briefly, a checkerboard is just a substitution cipher with pairs of symbols encoding row/col in a 5x5 keysquare. The row/col symbols don't have to be the same, or if they are the same, the order of symbols along the rows and columns doesn't have to be the same. Given a long enough message I would usually just convert to a simple substitution cipher, solve that, then backsolve for the keyword. With shorter messages you might have to solve for the keyword along with the cleartext.
