    Default Tree Mushroom Mushroom Mushroom Tree

    Does this look like a bacon cipher to anyone else?

    Wouldn't you have to know the spacing for all five characters between each tree for a Bacon cipher? Some trees are close together, with only room for two. There may be something to the base-5 system, like the page numbering. I don't see anything in the branches - too hard to count. The mushrooms are at least very distinct.

    Couldn't you just count trees and mushrooms? As long as you knew the starting point I think this could work, then just break it up in fives.... I dunno. Just a guess!

    It reminds me of page 16 of ATT. (I just dusted off my copy, I forgot how ragged and falling apart it is, with post-it tags all over) I forget if this page was a solve for one of the solutions.

    Default bacon cipher

    could the starting point for the preface be the glowing tree or is that too obvious?

    Potential starting points i see:

    The tree with the sun (the glowing tree)
    Top left corner
    Oddly spaced trees in bottom of left-hand page (missing tree)

    I've banged my head against this one for a while.

    59 trees
    Some trees repeat - branches will drive you crazy, easier to look a the markings on the trees

    59 sets of mushrooms (1 to 5 mushrooms each)
    The sun highlights 2 mushroom spaces.

    what does that mean though? i have been databasing lots of things like that, but what does it mean?

    It means that I have catalogued the trees and mushrooms, and attempted to decrypt. However, I have not found a viable-looking solution.

    Rather than providing all of my raw data (and possibly lead you down a wrong path), I'm giving some observations. If someone else has also catalogued the trees, and our observations match, then it's likely we are both on the same path and can then start sharing data.

    mushroom data

    Code:
    clockwise - from bright tree to the right of top border

    232323443 4 3133232325 3 3442534323232354 3 32242322323 4 324433343
            5     44    3               2

    second row is possible alternatives.

    there are two mushrooms not bordered in black - perhaps a start point.
    5 = 2(end) + 3(start)
    this would even up 59 sets to 60.
    giving us a round 30 letters from paired sets.

    can someone check this,
    some mushrooms are hard to see.

    thanks.

    ---------------

    below is some analysis on why the polybius looks strange.
    counting up the numbers there are
    1m = 1
    2m = 17
    3m = 26
    4m = 12
    5m = 3

    this is unusually skewed for a polybius.
    if you take the other morse phrases and take 30 letters from them and put into a polybius like so

    ABCDE
    FGHIJ
    KLMNO
    PRSTU
    VWXYZ

    where L=(2,3)
    then you tend to get a spread like this

    WELL DONE IS HALF BEGUN NOTHING VENT

    =

    11014
    12220
    03052
    00121
    11000

    giving totals of

    1s = 10
    2s = 14
    3s = 13
    4s = 14
    5s = 9

    much flatter spread. to get what we have need to limit the message to about 10 unique letters over 30.
    for example this phrase:

    WE SHALL SEE ALLS WELL THAT ENDS WELL

    would get the right spread but only if we rearrange the letters that appear into the top left corner of the grid.

    ---

    now back to the mushrooms,
    taking pairs clockwise from the top middle gives us
    (2,3)(2,3)(2,3)(4,4)....miss out last 3

    and this polybius

    00000
    01612
    16341
    00130
    00000

    if you count the pairs in the opposite direction you get a similar spread.
    both ways round only reveals 11 unique pairs which seems very few over 30 letters but
    as you can see from the phrase above it can be done.

    ---

    assuming the top right 5 mushroom is supposed to be split 2-3
    and starting with the 3 pairing clockwise gives the following
    cryptogram

    from the ABCDE polybius above:

    NKMHHJMTJNLLLOSLIHGLNLTMNLLLNR
      *  *      *

    the stars are doubtful ones.
