    Default Chapter 8- Question 1.

    Hello everybody.

I am new to this forum where I already found some useful hints for my quest.
I am 8 steps away from the 240's club but those ones are the most difficult to take.
About this chapter and question, I spent a lot of time trying everything I learned until now.

Here is a summary of what could be found in this thread about the question #1.
    - It's obviously a "rotate" cypher;
    - the number of characters is 1040;
    - "some" hyphen signs are part of the cyphered text;
    - the number of columns could be 104 (because of a 10-4 somewhere) or 130.

In my case, I found 1040 characters also but that number include 7 hyphens and not the isolated sign "marking the spot".
I tried two different programs I found online using the data above without any success: I jus get garbage, nothing readable.

    So, I call for help!
    What am I missing?
    What's wrong in my method?

Since I don't know if you'll see my mail information, I give it here (in a lucky -or unlucky- manner): WZQNYYRNGPBKQBGARG

Thank you for your help and good luck in your quest!
(Sorry for the eventual mistakes: English is not my first language...I am from the French region of Belgium.)

    Jean-Marie

    Hello Prudence!
    Bonjour Prudence !

    Thanks for your quick answer!
Merci pour cette rapide réponse !

Alas, even with your tips, I am still in the dark!
Hélas, je suis toujours nulle part malgré votre aide !

I would like to have precise answers (yes - no) to the following questions:

    - Is the number of characters of the poem 1040?

    - In those 1040 characters, are 7 of them hyphens?

    - Is the number of columns something like 130?

    - Could you give me a hint (or best, a number!) about the number of capitalized letters (not the big crosses, of course!)?

To everybody and especially to Prudence, a big THANKS and good luck in your quest!

    Jean-Marie.

Default Especially for Prudence (and for all other Europeans posting here)

It seems that the accentuated characters are not well "translated" when we use this website.

I am writing this post as a reply to the thread, and not a direct reply inside the thread like I did for my former post.

I am doing this to check if, done this way, the accentuated characters are recognized.

If it's not the case, I'll post one more message after this one and I'll try to not use accentuated characters anymore!

    Thank you for your patience.
    Merci de votre compréhension.

    Jean-Marie.

[The text is encrypted on 8 lines of 130 signs = 1040. The poem is a little shorter since there is the password most of the poem.
[QUOTE]- In those 1040 characters, are 7 of them hyphens?
In rereading the decrypted text I find 3 hyphens, but I could miss, the font is really small for the text fits on a page.

[QUOTE]- Is the number of columns something like 130?
    Oui/QUOTE]

    - Could you give me a hint (or best, a number!) about the number of capitalized letters (not the big crosses, of course!)?
?[38 capitalized letters
The text begins with the first letter of the poem, so capitalized. This letter must necessarily be found in one corner of the decrypted text, following the reading direction from right to left, left to right, from top to bottom or bottom to top. It is therefore interresting to know the poem before: we know the capitalized letter that start the text. the poem has been globally popularized in 1989.
    38 majuscules.
/QUOTE]

The hyphens in this on got me as well. Once I had determined the text I was looking at and the method of its encipherment, I ended up throwing all the hyphens away and adding three extra aligning characters by hand.

    This also came in handy:

    Hello everyone!

Ok. I give up for this question 8.1.......for now and for a couple of days or maybe a little bit more!
I will concentrate my 'brainpower' to solve the 7 other riddles/puzzles/.... missing for my 240's certification ;>)))

    Just for your information, I am also stuck at: 9.1*, 10.15, 11.1, 11.2, 12.1, 12.2 and 12.10.
    * (For 9.1, I have the first line of the answer. I am still searching for the three other words.)
:>)))))If you're like me, at least, you know you're not alone! :>((((

I just keep working and I hope to be back soon on this website with some good news!
Good luck and "talk" to you in a while.

    Jean-Marie.

    Jamyphx,

    Try this tool - Rotate

    Select "Right Rotate 90"

Put the text you pulled from the chapter into the box.

For Box Width - try numbers that divide into 1040.

When you find the right combination, it will be clear. THEN you can work out what characters at the end you need/don't need.
