Earlier on this thread, it states there are 1040 letters and that would seem logical for a columnar cipher...but I end up with 1037 letters after reading and counting them five times. Am I missing something here?

I ended up with 1040. Go through the chapter again looking for any letters you might have missed. I used a highlighter to make things a little easier on my eyes.

Ok, so I've re-read/highlited/counted/tallied a few more times today...still 1037! I have noticed in the last paragraph, there is a ten letter sequence, within the paragraph as opposed to a sequence at the end of a paragraph. Can't see anything else "within" a paragraph. And what about the one hyphened sequence? I've tried to figure cipher with what I have but it doesn't jive...gonna keep trying here...have to...only four to go...

Sometimes there are hyphens to consider too. But you have most of them so you can start dividing and then just shuffle some lines left a right a few characters.

I still can't find the "K" and "L " missing in the ciphertext (I guess the poem hidden in the text) and I only have 1037 letters in the ciphertext. In the poem there are 6 "K", 48 "L" (and 1 to 4 hyphens) in the ciphertext I found only 5 "K" and 47 "L "(and 1 to 10 hyphens).
Someone would have a clue?!

K=5 47=L
