I am having trouble with Chapter 11, Question 4. I know the source of the question, so I should be able to work my way backwards, but finding a keyword is breaking my brain. Any suggestions?

Have you found all of the sponsor clues?

Hello again, dear twelevers. I'm a little late in joining this hunt but am hoping to catch up eventually. One of the places I'm stuck is the poem in this chapter. I was able to get the author based on the length of his name (as it appears others here did too), but I can't find a matching poem. I know that it's not going to be an exact match, but I still can find anything close after hours of searching. Does the start of the cipher match (or at least resemble) the start of the real poem, or is this an excerpt from the middle of a poem? In either case, any recommendations on how to tackle this puzzle?

Many thanks to anyone willing to help,
    calvin

Best thing to do - the numbers in the chapter are in "groups". Translate the "groups" to letters. What could those "groups" represent? Write down the letters/numbers based on those groups.

Something should then "stick out" as a little different. What could that be?

That should help you match the poem from the author's list of works. Then you can work backwards for the cipher.

Thank you for the good advice. I did convert the first 8-10 groupings into letters, but I'll continue with the rest of the code. Hopefully something will reveal itself.

Ugh! I am a moron. After all that time searching for a poem that matched the general word-number pattern, I realized that I had missed the string of numbers from the very first page of the chapters. It was a pretty quick search to find the poem after that. Anyways, thanks again BoatD for your kindness. Hope I can return the favor.

I think I have figured out the poem at long last...one of the last 5 hold outs on my 240...just wanting to check and be sure before I begin the process of cracking the code to find the password.

The poem I found has a third word that is only 2 letters long, but the letter/pattern in our code shows 3 letters long but it is a double 9-9, which I take to mean that is an X meaning not a third letter at all.

Then the fifth word in the code is the same, but it is missing it's compound version of "to", meaning missing the last 2 letters there, but it still makes sense without it. Sort of less English and formal if you know what I mean.

SO I know that some of you mentioned that Ron picked this poem from the "book of not exactly accurate" poems, is this similar to what you found in your own search? I would have to guess yes, as the rest of the code/poem fits as snug as a bug in a rug through and through.

Now only to decipher this mess! LOL!

    Hey all!

I am going insane with Chapter 11 password. I know the author, but for the life of me cannot match a poem with the "letter-groupings". If anyone can help me, I'd be much appreciative. My biggest question is if you have the cipher text AND you know the plaintext, how the hades do you work backwards? I'm struggling with Chapter 12 password the same way. I know the poem and I clearly see what word sticks out, but I have no earthly clue how to work backwards with the information I have!! Any hints or PMs will be much obliged on either of my final two questions!!!!
