From page xxii if the book

    g) Once all chapter puzzles are solved and all 240 keys publically disclosed (through the solving of the chapter puzzles), the last treasure map will become available to everyone. <snip>
Looks like tackling of the 3D Sudoku and that page full of numbers can wait !!! lol

    Read the section again...

I get the impression nobody can open the Chapter 13 1/2 map until ALL the Chapters have been solved - even if you have all 240 questions answered

Kinda levels the playing field for the final prize.

You CAN open the map once all the questions are answered. You just can't make a guess.
The map is a little different than the maps in the other chapters. Some people (myself included) do benefit from knowing the "layout" in advance... even if that part of the contest isn't even open. In a contest of speed having information before others is always beneficial.

Hmmmmmm, I just worked my tail off for over two years on a contest that ended badly for everyone who had anything to do with it, and now it looks like I've walked into another one where the playing field is far from being level. It looks like I've wasted my money again.

How is the playing field not level? We all started with the same information: the book and the website. Anyone who has more information has EARNED it by working with what was given to them. Some people will put in more time than others. Some will solve things quicker than others. This does not make the contest unfair, just more of a challenge (and in my opinion, more fun.)
This is a great contest for a great cause. The only way you will have wasted your money is if you give up now and miss out on all of the fun you could have had solving the puzzles. Also, I have yet to read anything that says ANY of the prizes have been won which means that anyone who has a book still has an equal shot at winning one the prizes, including the $million.
I have participated in MANY hunts in my day including Dar (which I am assuming you are referring to.) One bad hunt should not discourage you. Just think how much practice you have had by participating in it. You should be more than ready for this one!

Maybe this thread isn't the best place to discuss frustrations with whether or not the Golden Eagle is unlocked yet (so to speak), but if I understand the point MG is making correctly, he is somewhat correct. The idea is that if he works extremely hard right now and gets somewhat lucky, he could be a million dollars richer in the next few weeks. At the moment, I'll assume there are 500 people working on this (I may not even be within an order of magnitude; it doesn't matter).

However, with the Golden Eagle locked - and maybe not getting unlocked for a number of years, even if MG gets as far as he possibly can in the next month, several thousand people might eventually get to that some point over the years, so that when the GE gets unlocked, he'll be up against several thousand people instead of the 500 or so that he'd be up against now.

So I'd agree that there's a point at that level, although I wouldn't call it a waste of money, primarily because the Silver Eagles are currently available, and winning one of those would more than pay for the price of this book! If someone really thinks they've got a shot at the Golden Eagle, then they should be extremely confident in being able to win one of the Silver Eagles - they're probably somewhat less difficult to solve and there are 12 of them.

Personally, from a Hunter standpoint I don't agree with the decision to keep the GE locked (if indeed it is; my knoweldge of the specifics on this is lacking), but from an author standpoint it may make perfect sense for 2 reasons. First - if the general solution mechanism for each chapter is the same (and there are some indications that they are), then whomever solves the first one will almost assuredly be able to solve the rest fairly quickly and will have a tremendous head-start towards winning the Golden Eagle. The second (and more probable) reason is to ensure money can be raised for the charity. If it were possible for someone to win immediately, then it would be very possible for that person to completely derail the underlying purpose. By putting up a roadblock of sorts, this allows more people to get involved, to get exposure, perhaps get some actors involved to increase awareness and get some big donors involved, etc.

    Just my thoughts on this.

    Cheers,
    Steve

My apologies. I started this by re-reading the rules now that I understood more about the hunt.

It was not my intention to lead us down this discussion path....
