I'm glad some folks seem to be making progress. However, I just don't get what is being said that "instructions" or "clues" or even "Riddles" are popping out of the story like nuggets. What nudge would you offer as a first step toward trying to understand where to look or what to do to make try and extract an "instruction" ?

    thanks and good luck

This is subtle, but it's something I wish I had known for sure early on:

The first optic cross clue was not just put there to help you get the chapter questions correct.

Would that be the one that ends in "belong"?

And BTW, I'm pretty much at the limit of where I can go with Chapter 1 without new clues. There are a couple of tasks (the one that appears to deal with 10=5+5 in particular) that no more amount of re-reading will help me with. I simply don't get how an ordering is supposed to work. I've thought long and hard about some of the cryptic clues and am pretty much at a dead end. Perhaps someone smarter will be able to work it out!

I've started moving on to chapter 3, which I think I've got some good initial ideas about. I've also made some discoveries in Chapter 4.

A complete picture of the keys may help. I hate to say this, but perhaps go read the chapter again. When you read it again, write down things... you will pick up on more clues. Look for the clues...they are everywhere when you look again.
I'm so short on time at the moment...I feel terrible. My answer is close and I wish I'd chosen a different chapter because now I don't have the time to work on this. I don't see any serious new clues yet... it looks like that will change soon though. I have a list in my mind of dangerous clues...and I hope to see none of them soon. This is fun... hope it continues

It pains me to think that many of you on this forum have invested the last 2 years trying to chase yet another "treasure hunt" that I am afraid will end up like many others such as Alchemist Dar. This one especially bothers me because it was supposedly done in the name of charity. Someone will most like win one Silver Eagle just to keep the carrot dangling, but that will most likely be all. I hope I am wrong, but burn me once, shame on you, burn me twice, shame on me and I'm feeling pretty warm right now.

I think that if you're doing this hunt as an "investment" then you're in the wrong place.

History doesn't smile happily on "treasure hunt" payouts, and the financial basis of this hunt has always been a bit (ok, a lot) of a head-scratcher to me. I for one have no expectation about prizes.

I am here to solve clever puzzles and be the first to do so. Puzzles were just made to be solved.

    Lobster,
Excellent point. The book was given to me as a gift, not to win anything, but because the giver knew I enjoyed puzzles, ciphers and mind problems. Thank you for your insight and bringing me back to reality. may the quest continue. now, the 64K question. Should I follow the cipher road, take every clue literal road or a combination of both?

No idea. I am corresponding with some people who are trying various cipher ideas, but there's nothing obvious yet. My solutions have tended to be more "riddle-y" in nature, but these have huge interpretative issues, where I'm constantly forming tenuous relationships between things that I have no evidence are even clues. I am constantly stumbling onto things that look incredibly interesting and promising, but that there is no CONCRETE information saying that I'm on the right track, or that what I'm seeing is a strange coincidence. I feel that there is a "riddle" element, but it's only solvable with information that you KNOW to be true -- which implies a cipher is needed too.

I have poked around with cipher ideas and looked for cipher-esque patterns in the text, but nothing really pops out. I suspect there's a cipher there somewhere that if you crack helps put pieces together, but I haven't any idea where it might be. Chapter 1 is just so densely packed with crap that could be used to mark bits of a ciphertext.
