    Default C2 solution is out

    The Solution to Chapter 2

    I rate this chapter a 0 out of 10.

Though posted elsewhere, I predicted "considerable consternation" over this "solution." In what way does it fit the constraints given? Where does one find the J and the Q?

Or, rather, dare I say that following the solution to ch 1 ... is anybody surprised?! And, let's not forget Ron's imagined prescience from March: "I had fully expected the solution to ch 2 to have been found by now." How so?!

And, after the 25 or so clues a mere two or three were needed to find this solution. They were "end of Pig War" and down the margins.

Clue 1 of 38: Our old friend "The first half is equal to the last half" is afoot again

The published solutions implies 10 = 8. Solution disintegrates at clue #1.

The only possible rationalization that I can think of for a lack of JQ is that "the third bird" is actually a 3rd resource/sequence. That ABBA song does say, "neither you nor I'm to blame when all is said and done". And the chapter intro says "It has been uncovered that there may have been a third Maltese Falcon". So there being a 3rd source isn't out of the question.

The problem with this is that such a solution therefore implies a third sequence (of size 2), which is not legal under a condition that Joy specifies in a hidden clue. So that breaks too.

There is actually evidence that I have found where 1 key might be "missing" from a sequence under certain circumstances, but there's absolutely nothing I've found to suggest that 2 keys are to be whisked out of thin air.

Feeling magnanimous today, Lobster? Isn't a zero a tad generous?

Fun and frolic for Twelevers (for starters): find the east and the west or "Bravo, said Romeo ..." or the more obscure "gold viol ..."

Someone please help me follow the solution. Where does it start, page and line on the mens and womens. Also, how would anyone know from the text in the stories to start at those words and bacon cipher each key. If I would have only found eight keys in a sequence, I would have thought it was wrong since it did nor generate 10 keys and moved on, not just added the last 2 un-used keys and hope it was correct. These chapters can be solved without any extra clues....yeah, right!

I can provide 90% of it

Page 32 ("42 - 10") in both versions ... in the line immediately following the encoded poem using the first letter of each word downward on the left margin. For the girl's version use the last letter of the right version in each line going downward.

    Boys: Into ... lost ... father ... dad ... = I L F D ... = 9, 12, 6 , 4 ...

    Girl's: in ... place ... soup ... = N, E, P, ... = 14, 5, 16, ...

Unfortunately, in the girl's version the last letter found is a B (2). There is no J or Q to be found. Excepting by inference?

    Hope this helps.

Ps. I said "right version" but meant right margin (the right margin of the page). Sorry for any confusion.

To add, the Bacon cipher is not employed in the solution. Discrete letters found explicitly in the text are used to find the solution. Only the Bacon encoded poem is used as a starting point ("following the Pig Wars ...").

However, had anybody attempted this solution for the girl's version they would have concluded that no J or Q would ever be found this way. I wonder how many found the G as the seventeenth letter ... but quickly concluded this method was impossible ... even Gisela admitted she found no J or Q ... but tried it anyway.

Shrek had the first half weeks ago. I helped him look for a similar sequence in the girls, but it was obvious there was no q or j in the right most position, so we concluded rationally that this was not the place to look. Instead we focused on the first letter of the last word, since these did have q and j.

Clearly thinking and making rational deductions have no place here.

I think we should all be given a little sticker to put on the front of our books, just underneath "All you have to do is find it"

    "But not without additional clues"

To be perfectly honest I feel cheated.

I had the first ten numbers and 8 of the second ten about 2 months ago but didn't submit an answer because I couldn't find the J or Q.

This may well be the end of the road as far as I'm concerned.
