Two things I noticed in the picture - if north is top of the page, then the shadow would suggest the person is facing west and it's early morning. Also, does anyone think the far left side of the mountain looks like a finger?

Is that your photo Scar13 or did you get it from the web? Fantastic match of POV if it is yours, useful reference for added items if from the web
Wow Scar, thats fantastic!
Gammon, after downloading the pix and observing it on magnification, the cactus on the left has only 4 branches. The same as the one on the right. The long extension is part of the mountains. Not sure it makes any difference.
Thanks Jeff, but it wasn't the long extension I was looking at. If you look at the rightmost branch, it looks like there is a shortened, or broken branch superimposed on the larger one. I could be wrong, what do you think? In any case, it may not be important anyway.
Is the answer to question four at the end of the chapter just a coincidence?
OK, came from the web, 5 Strange Ambiguities Affecting Lifespan on Globe with a few added extras !!
Per Wikipedia, it is a pic of Superstition Mountain, as opposed to MountainS as referenced in the story. The MountainS are really just one large Mountain in the Superstition Wilderness Area.
