Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
    Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before;
But the silence was unbroken, and the darkness gave no token,
And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, `Comb!'
This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, `Comb!'
    Merely this and nothing more.

I have "combed" through this chapter to a point where the pages are bald.

21 to 26 still need to go home.
The math is simple, so just use a comb
Just keep on going, the eagle awaits at the end of the race.
So, is this comb a devious clue, or am I overthinking again? I would assume Ron meant to say combo or combination. The period at the end of comb (and the end of the sentence) is also missing. Is the capital J the devious clue?

    Chapter 13
    By Lobster

At ten o'clock in the evening, the mist was beginning to coalesce, and wispy strands of it danced in the prickles of the great saguaro cacti. It had been almost seventeen or nineteen years since the group had last walked to the needle, and this time they planned on climbing down the valley and up to it in record time.

Charlie, tired from all the jeep traffic, took four-odd even spaced steps towards his diesel-spewing Lexus and smiled characteristically as he shuffled and hopped one-legged up to Nadine with his red cane, which reflected sunlight in all directions.

"My god", he exclaims colorfully. "What in Hell's name is that smell?"

"Oh, it's just you." His eyes meet Nadine's and he pulls on his ear and winks a few times. He stretches his arms and closes one eye suspiciously, happy to finally be out of the tight space of his car.

"I was watching you and counting", Nadine says mindfully as she walks towards him sideways. "You took too many steps. I think." She laughs with a cackle and rubs her temples with her index fingers. She looks up and down and a little bit sideways at the sunlit trees which cast shadows and rays of light upon the ground.

"Uhhh, how many steps am I supposed to take?", Charlie the fifth asks, as he wipes his forehead with his sweaty, muddy arm.

    Nadine giggles. "It's easy!"

"It doesn't look easy to me..."

"Oh come on, Bravo. Even ones. They truly have it. But only every third one. They truly have it. But all of them are important. And you're going to need a calculator. And you can go over on this one. Or at least, that's what I learned while drinking whiskey and doing the tango and foxtrot last weekend."

    "Huh?"

Nadine smirks. "It's a lot easier than you think."

    "Uhhh..." he began.

Petey the Mangy mutt, chewing on a chilli cheese dog, crossed the gravelly highway and stood rooted in his spot as he eyed Charlie and Nadine. As Charlie took a swipe at the dog with his cane the fine hairs on the back of Mangy Petey's neck rose.

"Mick will be here soon", Nadine intones tonally. She winks and points at the rainbow in the distance. "See? He's been off chasing rainbows, I think." She laughs as her fishy breath fills the air with a mist of stench.

Charlie nods and laughs in reply, his puffy red cheeks glowing and inflating like a balloon, his nearly weightless arms heaving and tossing like a ragdoll on the ocean. As his and Nadine's eyes meet they instantly know what they know and they both know that they know it well. They know that it is what it is, and that the secret that they shared was the secret that they would always share and no one reading about them could ever possibly understand what they were trying to convey. He laughs and scratches his nose with his left knee.

Mick, badly in need of a toilet break, waddles up to the edge of the group as he brushes cacti needles out of his hair. "Wish I had a comb", he says briefly, looking directly at the sun. "Charlie, you champ! You're a chip off the old block! Guess I'm not the first to say that!"

"Or the last!" They burst out laughing and Charlie's eyes go blank and roll ridiculously and completely unexpectedly up into his head. "I had to leave Charlie Jr by the stream", Charlie the fifth says. "Charlie had to stay with Uncle Charlie while he helps neighbor Charlie with new baby Charlie."

Charlie scratches his crotch with his panama hat and turns to face the rock wall, the veins in his neck throbbing as his heart skips a beat. "We're going to climb THAT? Don't we have to wait for Maxie? Besides, is Maxie even coming?" he added.

Nadine nods and points at her chin with eight fingers and takes a picture with her cell phone while making the peace sign. The stench continuing to flow off her in all directions for a second or third time. "Oh, you know good old Maxie. Maxie always likes to come. I certainly love it when she comes. Maybe she's coming right now? I sure hope Bradley also comes with his large package."

"You mean the backpack filled with illuminating yet unhelpful items in it, right?" Charlie asks, confused, as he drinks his V8.

Nadine says, "Ooooo-kaaay, back to our task. This is going to be so easy. It's straightforward. And simple. Like my father. And my brother. And if any of you can't get this you're idiots. All we have to do is use the map that's a wild goose chase."

"But why are you telling us to use something that we're told not to use?", Mick states obviously, as his arms flutter around his body in a circular manner, like a character out of the bible. "Or is it actually true, and the truth that it's false is actually false and therefore it's true?"

"Maybe", Nadine said with a smirk. "Maybe it is. Or maybe it isn't. My friend Joy suggested it was, but then again, we all know Joy is a little bit of a fibber. That most jealous Joy can't assist. No one's sure."

    "No one's sure?"

"Right. No one's sure. Not me, not you, not anyone. Just remember the hike has two halves, but one of those halves isn't really half. Like a river with two uneven shores. Or three this time."

    "Are you sure?"

    "No, I'm Nadine."

"Well that clears everything up!", Mick wails without joy as he tips his cap and shifts uncomfortably. "Seriously now, the map. Is it or is it not important?"

"Yes!" Nadine says. "It is important and I am obsessed with it, but whatever you do don't try to find it because it is bait. Keep in mind, of course..."

"So you're directing us to find something that isn't worth finding because it's bait?"

Nadine winks. "Precisely. Don't you see how easy this all is?"

"If you say that again I'm going to ram this..."

Nadine eyes the stick in Charlie's hand. "Fine. This is the last time I'll mention it."

"Well, I see how we're supposed to get to the pinnacle", Charlie says oddly, skipping in shifty circles while eating the remains of his caesar salad. Seventeen rotating cats weaved in between his thighs, and he strummed an air guitar as he howled like a fox and dodged six useless claws of the three doves, nine octopi, and seven Chihuahuas that stood by his side. "Just a little math. Just a little skipping. Just the couples. But every third number. And go backwards. And forwards. And once we round the bases we're home free! Soooo easy!"

"But all of that is in the future, isn't it?", laughs Nadine, thinking a little less deeply, as her sides start to ache from the hilarity of it all.

In the distance, their old friend Aurelianus tracks back and forth along the edges of the parking lot, a golden graal tucked in the saddlebag by his side. He ducks as a goose and chicken flap around his blushing ears.

"Aurelianus is here! Hooray!", Mick shouts as he jumps atop the picnic table and moos like a cow. His eyes flash like lightning and he shrieks and wails like a crazy man.

"He was the first and the last to come last time", Nadine says matter-of-factly as she rubs her chest. "He's always figured to be a little bit late."

The leader of men walks as quickly as his short knighted legs will carry him. "Sorry guys for being late", he explains. "Back from China. Had to visit the wall! Spent all day from dawn crawling through there. Wherever there was there was more, and man was there a lot of there there."

He lets out a laugh and pats the heaving, glistening backpack he has brought with him. The rest of the crowd throws back their horsey heads and hoot songfully at the faint moon on the horizon.

Aurelianus's brow creases and he looks serious. "You know", he finally begins, haltingly. "The answer lies with my father. Or my German mother. Or my father's father's father's Mexican uncle, who happened to be a cooper. My family and my family's family hold the keys to great fortunes. We can be rich like kings and my offspring will relish my relics like crackling hot dogs on a hot pebble-stoned fireplace. The sweat and the bowls and the grails, forever hidden will be prized possessions. I raise my eyes up and admire the shafts of light that lead us precisely to nothingness!"

    Blank stares. "Huh?"

    Silence.

"Dusk will be here soon, time we get started", Nadine says.

"Where precisely do we start", Mick asks.

Nadine snorts like a bacony pig. "At the needle of course. Start at the needle. "

Aurelianus looks confused. "Uh, aren't we supposed to start by skipping over and going back?"

"Yes. Precisely. Isn't that what I just said?"

    "Uh. No."

    "Is that a clue?"

    "Is what a clue?"

    "Precisely."

    "Huh?"

    "Huh?"

"Whoever said any of it had to make any sense?"

"Come on guys, time to lock my car. Now where - is - my keys?"

    "No, are"

    "Are?"

"What you mean is 'where are my keys'"

    "Isn't that what I said?"

    "No, you said is."

    "Whatever"

"They're lost. No one can find your keys."

    "No one?"

    "Right. No one."

"It's getting so dark out here. I still am not sure where to go?"

"Oh come on, it's all so very simp..." - "OUCH!"

BTW, that's not a clue... I just fell inspired by Ron's rich symbolism to write my own chapter I haven't the foggiest idea where to even start in C4. No clue. I did have a fantastically complete and multiple-validating solution a couple of months ago, but it was long blown out of the water by "easier than you think".

This most recent clues make no sense to me whatsoever, although we'll have some time to think about them, so maybe some pieces will come together.

    Good luck all.

    Lobster,
Amazing, brilliant and OMG! You should write your own treasure hunt book. Title it "The World's Greatest Treasure Hunt Without Necessary Spoon-fed Facebook Clues to Solve It." by Hot T. Butter

I'm just curious... does anybody feel that they know which letters to extract to make a sequence but can't figure out which cipher(s) to use? Or vice-versa?
