    Outstanding! I'm thinking post processing the majority of the time. How about this:

    1 4 7 10 13 16 19 2 5 8 11 14 17 20 3 6 9 12 15 18

    Here's an interesting question. Do you think a solution could ever be this simple. Instead of having to decipher the answer by looking for a sequence of letters, do you think there will be a way to hide the solution within the story by it actually saying: take every third one? Or how about something like first last first last first last...1, 20, 2, 19, 3, 18, and so on?

    Not sure if I understood you correctly. I am not saying hat this is a solution but just a step in the process the same as the Caeser -3 of chapter 3. So after geting the sequence we apply this transformation which after all is just a rack 3x7 with a missing cell

    Right I'm not saying its a solution either. But I do wonder if a solution could be hidden that way. That is to say that some sort of cipher from something in the chapter reveals a phrase that literally says: take every 3rd number. I wonder if we can have a solution that would be as easy as a recognizable pattern rather than the random placement of letters in a story. Thats all I was getting at.

    I know there are disagreements about the relevance of the pictures to solving the sequences but there may be some connection here, i.e., the shadowy figure in the picture appears to be observing the middle plant (agave?, cactus?) that has four branches. The two bracketing giant sequoias also have four arms each. So maybe "four" is important.

    In the first paragraph of the story there is this sequence "gold. Gold, gold, gold". "Gold" is repeated four times with the first letter of the second "Gold" in uppercase. Perhaps referring to a sequence of lower, upper, lower, lower case letters?

    Within the story there are five horizontal rules. 5 rules X 4 letters each = 20 letters total. Are these horizontal rules bracketing the five, four letter sequences like the sequoias bracket the middle plant in the picture?

    Just some thoughts and...this is Chapter 4.

    Just a quick correction before we start too much on the 4 theme based on the picture. They are not sequoias, they are cacti. If you look with a magnifying glass, the cacti on the left has 5 branches, one in the foreground is very short and on top of another branch. Easy to miss, especially with my eyesight.

    Sorry, I meant saguaro. 5 branches or 4 with one arm having big crack in.

    Nice idea. When I made my transcript I was puzzled by those horizontal lines, as a couple seem to be unnecessary, even measured them to see if they differed in length from other chapters. Seems to be the only thing that could be used with "This is just another measuring stick for those over here."

    My take is that in chapter one the sequence started on page 1. In chapter two it started on page 32. Chapter 3 on page 53. Would that hint that chapter 4 sequence begins on page 74? Just my two cents. And I am loving the discussion of this chapter and also would love for someone to solve it without a facebook clue.
