# Thread: Chapter 6 - Clues and Discussion

Not really... no other clues seem to hint at that, and none of the ciphers used in the books did that that I can recall.

Also not sure what the +0 would be about. What are you adding nothing to? Why are you adding nothing? Why when you add nothing are you getting something different?

Shrug!

2. Good thinking though Catherwood.....

E=5
10+5=5
21-6=5
v+0=w

?!

3. E=5
10+5=5
21-6=5
5=15
E=15
Your 15th key is E or 5
When counting to solve this chapter, starting with zero is a must
A=zero
Z=25
V+A(zero)=W Letter A starts the alphabet, except for chapter 6 where zero starts the alphabet.

Is anyone really working on this hunt?

Haven't looked at it in a while. To me, it's just a bunch of inconsistent equations where the variables haven't even been defined.

5. We are making it too difficult. The Atocha gives us a clue. Start at zero. Use the Joy clue as the guide.

6. Chapter 6 clue: V + 0 (zero) = W is a Caesar Shift (Rot22)

Applying the commutative property of addition, reorder the equation to 0 (zero) + V = W. The letter V has a numeric value of 22, just as E = 5. Replace the 0 (zero) with the letter A, then shift (e.g. add) 22 letters. The result is the letter W (numeric value 23).

Just catching up on Chapter 6 clues after a several month long break, any hints on the October 9th clue (Chapter 6 clue: UTKQKFLHQAZWMLQXFYWKCNPECJEZVRWTRCQWQETVGRXRHMYMLI CZSFURPAKPBBSRZRRYEP)?

7. October 9th clue (Chapter 6 clue: UTKQKFLHQAZWMLQXFYWKCNPECJEZVRWTRCQWQETVGRXRHMYMLI CZSFURPAKPBBSRZRRYEP)?
Boil it down remembering to start your counting with zero. First word is USING.

I used to think the answer was easy as pie!
or maybe a piece of cake?

I guess it's actually just easier than stealing candy from a baby??

9. Gizmo, you are spiraling out of control.

10. lol, nice gizmo.

Problem is that by its nature this solution has a lot of required details. Details which don't appear to be in any clue.

<< Chapter 6 clue: If after going through the storm you reach the eye, go back to the start. >>

At the end do you teleport back to the start? Or do you reverse direction to "go back to the start"? "when you get to the end keep on going" could be read either way, as is "go back to the start". By teleporting you aren't really "keeping on going", although you are "going back to the start". Toss a coin.

<< Which special 25 convention to use? >>

Does I=J, Q=Q, or something else? All are used in the book and even in this chapter. Toss a coin.

<< How do you take letters 2 by 2? >>
The clues keep saying this. Over and over. But it doesn't actually mean anything.

Do you take letters consecutively?
Every second letter is two by twos?
Letters taken 1,3,5... are also 2 by twos?
Do you skip letters? By 2s? 5s? 6s? Something else?
Do you take 2, then skip, then 2 more?
Do you take 1, skip x, take another, and put them together?
Do you go down a column taking pairs 2 by 2?
2 by 2 is 4. Do you take every 4th letter?
Do you take letters by 4s?
Do you take letters from page 2 by 2?
Toss a coin.

<< How are the 25 used with those taken 2 by 2? >>

There are about 50 ways to encode any given 2 letters, or two pairs of two letters, using playfair(keyword,ignored letter), subtraction (how do you/if you wrap?), addition, midpoint, etc. Clues suggest using most of these. Toss a coin.

<< Where do you take 2 by 2 from? >>
There are now clues that appear to point at the chapter text, the encoded poem letters, the English poem itself, the question section, and the answers. Toss a coin.

That's an awful lot of coin flips you need to get landing right to get the answer.
