Default The hunt is being put on hold after July 31, 2018

    E-mail:
    Dear Questors,

I would like to say thank you to all the Questors who have taken part in the hunt. Making this book and hunt and raising money for breast cancer was a dream come true for me. I cannot believe that it has been 10 years since we embarked on this journey.

I would like to congratulate the five winners who won prizes totalling $175,000 and the wonderful trips to the destinations in their respective chapters in the book. Those trips were definitely a highlight for me and my staff and I hope for the winners as well.

It has been an awesome journey, part amazing, part hard work, and part devastating. Has the hunt progressed as I thought it would 10 years ago? Absolutely not! I anticipated the hunt to last a maximum of three years.
In reflecting on the treasure hunt I thought of my brother. He was the one who taught me never to give up and to dream big. My brother died from pancreatic cancer and it still bothers me that he left this planet far too early. He was a smoker. We tried to get him to quit but he never did. The doctors told me after he passed that smokers are 400% more likely to die from pancreatic cancer than non-smokers. I still deeply miss him. He instilled in me the desire to never give up and that desire is still there.

The decision making process about what to do with the treasure hunt under the circumstances has been very difficult. Unfortunately, I have to face the reality that the hunt in its current form must change. I would like to share with you some of the things that have brought me to post this letter to all Questors.

    The theft of the eagles…
I know we have not posted much about what happened the day the eagles were stolen. We were told not to because of the police investigation. Since it has been two years and the police are no closer to finding the perpetrators we feel that we can let you know a little more.

The theft of the eagles was violent. In the end, I was taken to the hospital. I took a hit to my head with a metal pipe, lost a fair bit of blood and had six stitches to close it. Both of my legs had injuries, one of them more severely than the other. After the incident, a specialist confirmed that one of my legs had been run over by the getaway vehicle. It took two surgeries to correct the damage to my leg. My leg will never be the same as it tore one of the main nerves. I am able to walk however, and am thankful for that.

As well as the physical damage, the emotional toll has been tremendous. At this point we have not received anything from the insurance coverage and it could take years before we will know if it will be covered. Not knowing what the outcome from the insurance will be and not wanting the dream of the treasure hunt to end has made it impossible to make a decision as to what to do with the treasure hunt. For this I sincerely apologize for the long wait.

There are many more things that I would like to share with you about what happened on the day of the theft, and the circumstances surrounding it. The reality is because of the investigation, the police have advised to keep as many of those details to a minimum.

    Moving on……
Over the past year there has been an average of 2 to 5 people submitting answers to the map per week. In the Official Rules under section 6) c) it states: The treasure hunt will run until all puzzles are solved, winners verified, and eagles given out, or until such time, in FTII’s discretion, as interest has waned sufficiently to believe that no one will solve the puzzles.

The fact is that more than three times the number of clues have been given out for chapter 6 than should be required to solve the chapter. In my opinion the next clues that would be given out are simply giving the answers away and that is not what the hunt was supposed to be about.

I truly would like to get the hunt back on track. I have always been hopeful that we would get this resolved. The issue is that I couldn’t and/or wouldn’t let the hunt go because I believe in the treasure hunt and the cause for which it stands. With the main prize gone, and the uncertainty of the insurance company not covering the claim there would have to be changes to the hunt, including the grand prize. If the insurance money does come through we do plan on making changes and continuing the hunt at some time in the future.

    Finally……
My hope was to raise a substantial amount of money for breast cancer research. This has not happened.

I received a great deal of enjoyment in recently talking to Questors and hearing how much they enjoyed the hunt. It grieves me that the hunt as it stands will not come to its natural end.

With this in mind I have made the decision to place the treasure hunt on hold until such time as we can get certainty on the results of the insurance coverage. We will accept answers up to and including July 31, 2018. After this date will no longer accept answers. Our intention is to restart the hunt once some certainty comes.

For those out there who disagree or are unhappy with this decision, we would like to offer a 100% refund for the cost of the treasure hunt book (not the Cracking the Code book). To receive the refund you need to be the original owner and have the book registered under your name. If you feel it necessary to take us up on this offer you would not be allowed to participate in the new hunt that may take place later on. The refund offer is available until December 31, 2018.

Simply mail your book with your name, address, username and phone number to:
    Forgotten Treasures International

    Suite #2591 - 534 Railroad Ave,
    Sumas, WA.

I again would like to say thank you for all those who have supported us. I hope you received some enjoyment from the book, its puzzles and trying to solve the maps. I am sorry to disappoint my readers, but feel I have no other alternative.
If you have any comments or would like to talk to me directly please personal message me with your number and I will do my best to call you back.
    Thanks again for your support.

    Most sincerely,

    Default Well

So one might ask oneself, if the robbery were so horrific and so obviously NOT an inside job, why has the insurance company not paid??

Also, I guess the brother that died is not the one who told the papers after the robbery not to believe a word Ron says. About anything. I wonder how grateful Ron is for his surviving sibling?

Conning people by talking about death and tragedy is one of the oldest tricks in the book. People don't want to believe the worst about other people and that's good. But taking advantage of that quality is evil.

Oh and by the way, this is all your fault for being stupid:
The fact is that more than three times the number of clues have been given out for chapter 6 than should be required to solve the chapter. In my opinion the next clues that would be given out are simply giving the answers away and that is not what the hunt was supposed to be about.

AND IF YOU'VE BEEN RUN OVER BY A CAR, IT DOES NOT REQUIRE CONFIRMATION BY A SPECIALIST - YOU KNOW!!! Take it from someone who does know and had 100s of stitches to repair a liver.

After the incident, a specialist confirmed that one of my legs had been run over by the getaway vehicle.

I was surprised to get the email, too. I'm not working on the hunt, never even bought the book, but I guess I'm on a mailing list somewhere. I keep thinking back to the earliest of early days, when the author tried to get financial backing from "Shark Tank" (or it's British equivalent? I forget) and being turned down. I wish someone back then had told him all the reasons a treasure hunt book never turns a profit and how so many of them are never solved. (There are a few success stories, sure, but I'd prefer Ron had only heard the bad omens up front and rethought the whole project.)

The tales of tragedy behind the scenes only makes this a sadder chapter in ATH history. I don't want to dwell on that. Instead, I'd like to hear the thoughts of the people here who have invested years of their lives to an impossible task. Do you want to see it modified or cancelled? Would it be better to call the whole thing off, get a clean break, or draw out the ending with a restructured set of puzzles? (Is it even possible to rework the book with some sort of add-on booklet?) Were the monthly clues a bad idea from the beginning?

I will continue to track your progress, whichever direction it takes you.

This whole fiasco should end, be buried and never resurface. I personally invested months studying clues and trying decipher clues from the text. What a waste of time. The only way to solve any given chapter was through spoon fed clues by the author and his “team.” Someone wrote the story, then Ron chose a word place in the story, poem or questions to cipher a puzzle. He constantly berated his questors by saying that enough clues had been and we were making it too difficult. The answer is right there you dumbasses!
Granted, some of the best arm chair puzzlers from across the world were playing. Many figured it out quickly that the game was being manipulated by the author probably based off of book sales.
Chapter 3 was won rather quickly so that chapter 2 and chapter 3 trips could be done together to save money. Look at the clues for chapter 3 and how specific they were so as to solve quickly.
I got rid of my book months ago. He blew it. He had a very nice book and website. He could have raffled off the last silver eagle and the decoy eagle which was never used as a decoy, but rather an ego inflating piece of art he could flaunt.
It has been two years since the robbery. The insurance claim should be settled, unless there is something awry. Either Ron is not being honest or he is about to face some prison time for fraud.
Many like myself are glad it’s over.

No way those silver eagles and trips totalled $175,000. Silver eagles maybe $8,000 each and the trips were donated with frequent flier miles. Maybe $50,000 total for all five awarded and the trips.
So the golden eagle was valued by Ron at $7 million and he claims he had a buyer at the time it was stolen. But insured it for less than a millon and is sueing for $400,000?
I may not be a genius, but I know when the math and stories do not add up.

I'm not involved in this hunt, but it caught my attention as yet another hunt that has taken a turn for the worst like so many others. It is a strange thing to see puzzle creations and their promise of reward being compromised by some unfortunate circumstance.

Seriously??? Yet another hunt bites the dust. Hours and hours spent - all in vain.
Team Meaner will be heading full-time into geocaching, since we actually get to succeed (most of time)
and the times we don't inspire us to continue til we do!!! There is always a cache waiting somewhere, unlike these hunts!
We will NOT be participating should this hunt ever revive. Sigh~
"We may not be first, but at least we are not last!" Meaner Simikkles RULE!
