That's because Curtis Burdine doesn't exist. And whomever is on the receiving end of our e-mails is M.I.A. Lafitte

    missjax,

You can't believe everything you hear or read. I am a skeptic and proud of it. You have to be skeptical of the marketing spin in media, especially from startup companies. Every work for one? I have, and it is only natural to stretch the truth in order to compete with the big boys and stay alive. SQ and Pirates mag are both startups. And SQ probably does not have the financial foundation that Dillinger had doing ATT.

And as Brady pointed out, part of that startup spin is the inflated advertised value of the so-called prizes. Now, if they knowingly sock the winners with a 1099 for the inflated value, that is terrible. If I were the GaGa's, I would be pooping bricks right now. They could be in for a rude awakening. If they ever receive the so-called prize, I mean.

I find moscow32's allegations particularly disturbing. I never expected any of the prizes to actually be worth the "retail value", but I was hoping that they may be worth (meaning how much we could get for them if we sold them) at least 1/4 to 1/2 the stated "retail value". If what moscow32 says is true, I may have been vastly over-optimistic.

If the primary "retail value" of the big prizes is based on the "value" of these garbage gems, selling the doll or the idol may not even cover the costs of traveling across country to find a token.

Does anyone remember hearing about actual gold content of the idol? I checked the original thread about the idol
    http://tweleve.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5397
and it just says "The prize for this lovely hunt is a 23K gold guilded, [emphasis mine] authentic replica statue of a jaguar god, bejeweled with over 100carats of the finest Emeralds. This is truely a site to behold, this is the kind of treasure you kill for. " So it appears the "value" may be in just those finest Emeralds.

After the ga-ga's won the amulet I was hoping we would hear how much they got for it, so we could gauge how much to expect for the other prizes in relation to their "value". I then noticed the same clause Rusty mentioned about SQ releasing the prizes after all publicity was done and "entirely at the Sponsors discretion". And I would swear I saw a post somewhere saying the 3 big prizes were going to be going on a tour this Fall (I guess that never materialized), so I realized it could be a long time - if ever - that we found out what the Amulet was really worth.

I was happy when the puzzle cards came out, because they had an actual cash prize, so we would know definitively what we could get for our efforts. I was also surprised when the cards didn't seem to generate more interest on the forums. Perhaps flashy baubles have more appeal, even if we don't really know what they're worth.

For the same reason, I was glad when the extra Archive hunt for the gold coins was announced, again because the prize would have a definite, definable value.

I think it's safe to say I won't be participating in any more hunts based on prizes of dubious gemmological value unless we get verifiable assurances of real value. At this point it would take a lot for SQ to earn my trust.

Well said, gr. Dillinger included a signed appraisal of the Dar rings in his book. Would be nice to see such a thing from SQ. I would be skeptical if it was signed by an unlikely name like Burton Caldwell, or Lawrence Jamison, or Hillary Montegue.

My guess that the appraisals would be by Sir Dewey Cheatum Lotts

I find it very interesting that Abe Froman aggressively asked these questions about Gris Gris a while back. He also was trying to get the answer as to what the actual value of these gems and doll are. Golden Pundit was quick to reply and I kind of remember his breakdown of the tax laws.
Haven't seen any posts from either of them in a while and I wonder what they would think of these posts... Lafitte

That is quite interesting isn't it. Could they have been kindly asked to go away maybe? Has anyone considered taking this whole SQ business to the news? I would be willing to go along with that.

It is interesting if you look at the posts made by GP and Abe. If I remember correctly, GP, although claiming to be "racing" me to the Gris-gris doll, only posts in defense of SQ. This makes me wonder whether he is one of SQ using a pseudonym. Abe posted more stuff discussing clues, but I wonder about him also, mainly because of the timing of his posts, and his avatar.

I am not saying that this is what is happening with GP and/or Abe, but does any of the veterans here remember when Jason's wife was posting about the "s and s" mini-hunts collaborating with the discussions about the possible location of the treasures?

I've tried to find that avatar but haven't been able to. Would love to know where it is from because I do like it.
While G.P. and Abe were posting there was one that really made me do a double take. G.P. signed off by saying "peace" like Jason does. It made me read through the post again wondering if this was Jason...
Funny how my mind starts to go off on these tangents.
And I wonder why so many packages got returned to S.Q.
