    Default Poe connections?

I just learned that "to Helen" is a poem by Poe. Helen is also Michaels wife's name. Perhaps just a coincidence. But Edgar Allan Poe also wrote short story called "The Gold Bug". And it included a secret message that was ciphered. Here is a link to more details about it.

Perhaps there are more connections to Poe out there in ATT? Just a thought.

    wow, this is amazing!

sure, i think MS would use this! he's always mentioning that Masquerade book as a big influence - i'm sure a famous author like Poe having a treasure hunt (albeit long ago) got his attention too!

if he is referencing Poe's hunt, perhaps he's using it as an example - saying "look how this one was solved. that's how you can solve some of my clues!".
if it's not fun, what's the point?

here's the poem. the text of it includes no "Q"'s!

it also mentions alot of places - holy land, window niche, a statue, a lamp...

and what are "Nicean barks of yore"?

    Nicea is an ancient empire.

I believe the lines beginning "Nicean barks of yore" refers to boats bringing tired sailors home, which he compares her beauty to, being so great that it "brought him home".

I wouldn't go looking for that poem as any significant info for ATT... specifically the part about missing Q. It's also missing J and X.

Another thing to consider here is that MS has said somewhere that he admired Poe. Poe had a true passion for ciphers and that seems to be what we are up agains here. I heard that one of Poe's challenges for the public was not solved until the year 1992 and another in 2000...

    so you're saying it's on a boat?!

    Default Poe Connections

    Miluo:
You are correct in your info on Poe. I have taken numerous classes focusing strictly on Edgar Allen Poe. I posted a question to MS directly on this, asking him if he was a fan of Poe, he answered YES. (the other Qwest for Treasure board) I never posted any of my theories, as I wasnt sure how they would be taken. But I do believe that MS has made several references to Poe in the story and the companion book.

It would be very worthwhile for everyone here to read, "The Purloined Letter," "The Gold Bug." "Murders in the Rougue Morgue." These are short stories, but you will definately see a strong connection when you read them.

This thread might (99% probability) no contain anything useful for us. I just wanted to add/update some tidbits to the Poe theory.

    1. "to Helen" : Two (or more?) poems by Poe.
    1831: http://bau2.uibk.ac.at/sg/poe/works/poetry/helen_1.html
    1848: http://bau2.uibk.ac.at/sg/poe/works/poetry/helen_2.html

    2. "Not long ago" (P.14) : Is the first line in some of Poe poems.
    1847 (To Marie Louise): http://www.eapoe.org/works/poems/toml01a.htm

    3. Poe wrote a set of poems called Fairyland...

    4. Poe wrote a poem called "To Mary" (Nary->Mary?)
    http://www.eapoe.org/works/poems/francesa.htm

Here is a link to a summary of some of his poems and their first lines:

Here is a ling to all POe's work:

    Any thoughts on this?
