Smile the business bug has bitten me!

    Very strange story here!
For over 20 years I have been visiting Renaissance Festivals - mostly the one in Tennessee.
I love the era and the guy in Tennessee is building a most amazing castle!

Well - over the years I have talked with many people there - last summer I got especially close with the guy that sells horns and tails there. His helper got sick and I filled in as a helper - what a new an amazingly different experience that was. Well we kept in touch through the summer fall winter and spring! Not long before the 2008 festival was to begin he was able to get a job for my youngest daughter, Zoe - (some of yo may remember some of the lively trivia games where she came online with me) - Zoe just turned 18 and is going to attend university in the fall - so an opportunity to make some cash - couldn't be passed up! Well - she needed a ride because we haven't had time to get her licensed yet! also gas for practice is a bit high lately! long story - well - ok - not short! I decided to ask my friend if he cold find me work there too since I needed to be doing all that driving - the festival is about 100 miles from our house! he said I could help him out - so off we headed thursday after work the first Thurs in May - to begin work that Friday for the school day opening! We committed to be there that day and each of the full weekends of May plus Memorial Day!
well - on the drive down I got a call form my friend - saying he hoped I wasn't going to be mad at him but that he had 'farmed me out' I said no problem I am flexible!

Well - he farmed me out to the lady selling gypsy jewelry! How BIZARRE is that?!?!?!? I am the least girly girl I know! I wear men's pants all week to work cause they have better pockets! But - the lady in charge of that booth had just had a misscairrage and really needed the help so I said sure! I was a bit shaky at first but hit my stride by the second day! She was thrilled with my efforts. (partly because I could work the entire day without a bathroom break - lol - I do that all the time in my regular job - she however was very impressed with that! ) I had a blast learning the trade! that first weekend I admired her hair - well what she does is make a ponytail way high on her head and then put ponytail holders filled with long strands of yarn over her hair and lets it hang down her back! She called it the 'best hair cheat in the world' I asked if she minded if I copied it the next weekend and she said a friend had made hers and sure! go for it! SO - during the week at home I dug out some miscellaneous yarns - have many cause I have crocheted sporadically for years!
so by second week I had created 3 of these hair ornamentations! I wore one and gave one away to a lady Zoe and I shared a room with while we were there on the weekends. I had an amzing amount of fun making them. So after getting raves on the ones I created that weekend i came back the following weekend with 21 more in my trunk! giving some to the lady I was working for! - Zoe and I each wore one and other vendors started asking where they were coming from - several wanted some - ( I couldn't actually sell them because I was not a vendor - just a worker and that sort of stuff needs all manner of approval and such! ) but - I ended up asking just for the cost of the yard and came home after that weekend with only 6 of the 24 I had made at that point and $50.00. And a load of people telling me I should get a lot more for them that that! that no one around the midwest was doing them and that it was a great fad at east coast festivals and I should make more! Well - giving this a lot of thought through that last week before the Memorial Weekend and close of faire! I decided I should indeed make more and make some money! By that Friday I had a website up and 1000 inexpensive cards printed! I just today backed up and actually got a business license in my county - lol - never was able to do things in a proper order!!! never tried my hand at business before! But I love making these things!
SOOOOOO if you are a lady likes to do a little something different with your hair! or occasionally feel like long hair! or just adding a spot of color! (in a temporary way!) PLEASE check out my website! this stuff is fun! I am excited! anyway today my business was officially born! and I shipped my very first order to a nice lady in Indiana!

please check out FaireHairbyL.com - and if you like what you see - please tell others!
of course I am not quitting the day job - but this way I am keeping a bit of the festival in my life all the year round and this stuff is truly a folk art and natural outlet for the creative side of me!
and if any of you actually got to the end of this long long story! Thanks for listening I am busting with excitement to share! Enjoy the day! namaste' L ( also known as backgammonbob )
