Default Spoiler Tags: When Are They Necessary

Just a question regarding these spoiler tags. Are they only subject to the Maranatha hunt? It seems to be unconducive to the whole brainstorming quality this forum shines on, when we have to "hide" our brainstorming behind a spoiler tag. I understand the pros/cons of the whole debate, but was wondering what we have to and don't have to put in the tags. My reasoning is that the whole ATT hunt would probably have not been cracked so quickly if people were required to place all their insights regarding the clues in the book in a spoiler tag just to be PC regarding a few people's views on the subject. The hunt is the hunt, and to share the info and brainstorm with others is part of the required risk. Please shed some light on this subject for me. I will truly appreciate it.

I appreciate your comments. No they are not just for the Marantha Hunt they are for everything. Brainstorming isnt something you should hide. If you feel you have solved something, or made a breakthrough, please hide it for those of use that like to do the hunts at our own pace and not at that of the internet. I don't see how it really makes a difference in any other respect than that because all it takes to uncover the hidden text is the click of a button. SO the negative is that you have to click a button to see the spoiler, and the positives are that you dont spoil the answer for other people and the search engines dont pick up the answers to everythng we do so some lurker can get the info without registering or even coming here.

I disagree respectfully, as I said before, all anyone has to do is click a button to reveal the hidden text. so i dont see how that would have stalled our progress. Maybe because the search engines picked up the answers did in fact crack it faster but I wont have that anymore for obvious reasons. If there are any more concerns I can address or any I didn't please feel free to post again and let me know! Thanks! :P

Spoilers are all about choices and options. I have the choice to reveal the spoiler tag, whereas before I was forced to look at a possible answer. If someone wants to take the time and try to decipher what the community has already solved then its their choice to do that, sometimes they will go down paths no one else has. If someone wants to catch up quickly so they can help the community then they can do that too. (SearchingTudor, I know you know this but they dont know this so now everyone can know it )

I think the main problem with using them right now is that no one is giving a little insight into what kind of answer is under the spoiler tags. I'm seeing post with just a spoiler tag and nothing explaining what might be underneath. Its still a gamble and you dont know what kind of info your getting (this completely defeats the purpose of spoilers.) If members start giving a little sentence before the tags of what the spoiler's subject, area of the book, etc then I think the effectiveness will shine through. As for when to use them and not use them is a blurry line. Sometimes speculation should be put under a spoiler, sometimes not. Use your best judgement and if in doubt PM a friend or mod for an opinion.

    Thanks,
    Nitefyre

PS- Maranatha is not the only hunt using Spoiler tags, Scrollquest has been using them too

EDIT: Ackk, Cthree beat me to it, posting at the same time

hehehe Nitey settles for the silver medal!

You do make good points about context though. For the spoilers to work properly, be sure to describe as best you can what is under the spoiler without spoiling! Its an aquired skill but i have faith it will be for the best.

    C3 and Nitefyre,

Thank you sincerely for your responses. I never mind abiding by the rules of another's house, just wanted to make sure that I don't cross the line when posting something potentially a spoiler. It's just such a vague area, this spoiler thing. lol Thanks again though! I really appreciate it!

    Happy Hunting!

Can I weigh in on a principle for spoiler tags?

It would seem that process  and brainstorming are not spoilers.  After all, they could be wrong.  However, solutions or end results are spoilerific and therefore should be contained in the tags.

Comments, recipes, counterpoints, excessive spoiler tags?

    Cheers-

    Default Spoiler tags and attachments

I noticed most spoiler tags contained only text. How do we place an image within a spoiler tag? I usually post images as an attachment.
