    Literary Treasure Hunt Ending

The $25,000 dagger is still hidden…but only for 30 more days

The best selling mystery, Vegas Die, by author Stephen Grogan, has hidden clues within its pages that would lead treasure hunters (known as “Questors”) to a dagger redeemed by the publisher for $25,000 cash.

The hunt in progress for the last two years now ends on December 14th. Hundreds of Questors have sent in thousands of guesses on the dagger’s location. Has anyone been close?Yes, there have been some near guesses,” says Author Grogan, the only one who knows the location of the dagger. “But these Questors took a last minute wrong turn and missed the discovery.”
Grogan says he is amazed at the intelligence of the Questors who have dissected the book looking for clues. “Among mystery fan readers, there have been scientists, cryptologists and computer geeks tearing apart every word and nuance to gain the right path.

“My goal was to write a mystery seamless, that is a reader saw nothing out of the ordinary except a good story. But then could re-read Vegas Die and realize there were findable clues.”

There is an active website forum, www.VegasDie.com, where Questors exchange ideas and analyze the story, always aware of the Quest Mystery™ mantra: “Nothing Is As It Seems”. If the dagger is not discovered at the close of the contest, Grogan intends to post the solution on the website, and the publisher will add the explanation to any subsequent issues of Vegas Die.
Grogan has taken his treasure hunting motif into another mystery novel, recently published. Captain Cooked offers a Hawaiian war club hidden somewhere on the Big Island of Hawaii, and the clues require you to use GPS and tour the island searching for the prize.
For a $25,000 treasure, the countdown begins. Vegas Die is available through all major bookstores and in most e-book formats.

It's been a long and sometimes fun, sometimes frustrating ride, but the ride is ending tonight at midnight. I've been working on this treasure hunt for just over 2 years. (I know that some hunts go longer.)

The book was released in March 2008. I bought the book from the author at a Border's airport signing in November 2008. I figured the mystery would have been solved already, but maybe I could get some insight into the way the author thinks and solve the next one. I was surprised to find it had not been solved and then figured I would have to hustle to catch up before someone solved it. Two years later, the quest is ending and is still unsolved.

It's ending early. It was supposed to go a full 3 years, so that means it's ending 3 months early. The reason why? This is the reason given on the Quest Mystery website. (Go to QuestMystery.com. Click 'News and Events' and scroll down to 'Important News.')

"As we test our concept of the Quest Mystery and realize the success in creating a viable Questor community, it is our view that a 3 year search for the hidden dagger is too long. We have decided to shorten the Quest, the location of the dagger to be revealed on December 14, 2010—though we hope you find the dagger sooner than that.

What does that even mean? It may be that he just released his second Quest Mystery (it takes place in Hawaii) and wants to focus his energy on promoting it, not Vegas Die. Some guess that the dagger's location will be compromised soon, construction being a way of this town.

I have to say, though, that I don't feel any closer to solving it than I felt one month after I finished reading the book. During that first month, I read the book, figured out that the card suits were Morse code, spent my Christmas break experimenting with XY coordinates, checked out a location and sent in a guess on Christmas Eve, got a response on Christmas Day, "Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, the dagger is not at that location." We keep finding locations in town that have some connection with the book (I'm sure I could close my eyes and point at a LV map and find some connection to the book no matter where my finger lands), but haven't found anything in the book that leads us to a location.

I, and others as well, feel this hunt was like looking for a needle in a haystack. Lots of tid bits in the book that don't seem to lead anywhere, but we were warned that there were dead ends and red herrings. We'll find out at midnight, or whenever it's posted, if we were overlooking the obvious or if this was an impossible mystery. Our reaction will either be, 'I should have known that' or 'How were we supposed to know that?!'

Anyway, I learned more about Las Vegas history and met some cool people.

I was rooting for you LV guys to find this dagger. At least the bright spot was that side splitting Utube video someone made of Hitler demanding to find it! What a roar.

    good luck!
