    Saw something about this online yesterday. They think it was created in the 1400s now, as opposed to the 1500s.

    After that I saw the link to Yale's scans, and they are indeed nice.

    However, I'm wondering if it's plaintext with heavy embellishments. Say the author was writing "the rain in Spain stays mainly in the plains" and then, trying to be "artsy", traced over the same lines with flourishes and other decorations.

    Either that or he didn't count on the ink bleeding through the pages, and what we're seeing is not what he wrote.
