    Default Pittsburgh

    Hello!

I bought this book a few weeks ago, only because I read in the forums that there could be a possibility that the treasure, or "key" may be located in Pittsburgh. I have lived in Pittsburgh for 32 years, and since then I live just outside of Pittsburgh in the suburbs. There are several convincing clues that could possibly point us in the direction of Pittsburgh. These would include (but are not limited to):

1.) Pythagorean Numerology and the shape of a triangle. Pittsburgh's three rivers make a land formation of a triangle which is called "Point State Park". You often hear the city of Pittsburgh being called "The Golden Triangle".
2.) There are several mentions of war in TWP. One reference is to the Civil War and the Battle of Gettysburg, which is in the state of Pennsylvania. The other is the war in South East Asia (Cork). The French and Indian War was fought here in Pittsburgh. Fort Pitt still remains at Point State Park.
3.) Could it be that Gettysburg and references to a groundhog and therefore Punxstawney are there to let us know that the key is in the state of Pennsylvania?
4.) The colors gold and black are mentioned frequently. Pittsburgh is home to the Steelers, the Pirates, and the Penguins, all of which wear black and gold uniforms.
5.) The first letters of each word in the last chapter give you: "Bare the Cross, Leave the Center, Find the Fruit".
There are several fruits mentioned in the text, cherries, an orange, and an apple. And the word "fruitless" comes up once. It has been mentioned that if you leave only the centers of these fruits, the cherry will leave you with a pit, as in "PITsburgh". It has also been mentioned that the word "Cross" could refer to Crosstown Blvd, and "Center" could be Center Avenue, both of which are near the Civic Arena where the black and gold penguins play hocKEY.
6.) The initials DGR from Department of Game and Resources could possibly refer to a shoe store in downtown Pittsburgh.
7.) One chapter is titled "Sandcastle". Pittsburgh is home to a water park called none other than "Sandcastle".
8.) The word "iron" is mentioned in two stories. Once on page 52 and again on page 79. Pittsburgh is known as the "Iron City". Some of you may remember "Iron City Beer".
9.) There are many, many references to beer. Pages 5, 6, 8, 9, 57 (x2), 58 (x2), 59 (x3), and 69 all have the word "beer". Why so many times?
10.) The word "watershed" appears three times. When was the last time you remember reading the word "watershed" in a short story? Or in any length story? It appears on pages 1, 14, and 39. There is a watershed in Pittsburgh. It is called the "Allegheny Watershed" and has the number 05010009.
11.) There are many mentions of "round", especially in "Two Dogs", and the "arch" and "bow" in "The Bow". This could be a reference to the shape of Mellon Arena. It is a round building with a dome.

I may not have touched upon all of the proposed Pittsburgh references. Most of those that I listed have been posted by someone other than myself. But I added a few ideas of my own.

These all sound very convincing. But I am still not totally convinced. There are too many things that are unanswered. Sure they could be red herrings, but I wouldn't expect this many red herrings. Some of the unexplained things that I think do not relate to Pittsburgh are these:

    1.) The horse racing theme
2.) References to the Greatful Dead
    3.) The Egg Hunt
    4.) Uncle Tom's Cabin
    5.) The Donner Party
6.) Baseball theme (We have the Pirates, but many major citys have a baseball team.)
7.) The mention of many other places: New York, San Francisco, Nantucket, Las Vegas, etc...

There are some stories that I am totally at a loss for. One is "Cork" the other is "Forty-Eight States". I have no idea what they allude to, if anything! Who is Cork? Who is Rick? Who is the old rock-n-roller? Who is Cal? And how about Denise? Should we know these people?

And there are some things that people have brought forth that I disagree on. For one, I don't think the Silas mentioned in "Sandcastle" is the Silas in "The Rise and Fall of Silas Lapham". It just doesn't seem to fit for me. But I can't come up with anything better.

Everyone's first thought about the Donner Party is to connect to the Donner Party that was caught in a huge snow storm when they were attempting to cross the Sierra Nevada Mountains. This is reasonable because the story in TWP is taking place during winter. But if you look closely, the author is referencing a SHIP. If you dig a bit, you will find that there was a ship captain named George R. Donner who had a ship called the O.M. McFarland. It was a freighter ship that picked up coal in Erie, Pennsylvania. The captain mysteriously disappeared when the ship was in the Great Lakes. Could this be another reference to the state of Pennsylvania? The Donner party of the Sierra Nevadas just doesn't fit if we think the location is Pittsburgh.

I seem to find many connections between stories. Like the words "iron" or "watershed" mentioned above. But I have found other connections as well.

For example, We have the chapter narrated by Abraham Lincoln. We have the "Two Dogs" chapter which may well be an allusion to "Uncle Tom's Cabin". Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote UTC. Did you know that she once met Lincoln at the White House? William Dean Howell wrote "The Rise of Silas Lapham". (I know I said I didn't agree with this being one of the allusions, but bear with me for the connection here.) Did you know that Howell also wrote a campaign biography about Lincoln? One of the books on Grandfather's shelf was "Great American Painters". Mary Cassatt painted "Children Playing on the Beach". It is hanging in the National Gallery in Washington, DC. These all seem to link to the nation's capitol.

What about the light bulbs in Grandfather's Office and the Light Sensitive guy? Could this be some sort of connection? How about the Civil War and the war in Southeast Asia? Could there be a connection between those two chapters?

What about the beer in the first chapter and the beer that the rock-n-roller offers in "Forty-Eight States"?

Someone just recently posted that these are "Fictional stories with non-fictional references". Can we make a list of each of the stories and what event or person in history that they reference? I was glad that someone posted this, because before this was posted, I believed that we were looking for allusions. Allusions need not be something that is non-fictional.

If this key is in Pittsburgh, it will certainly need to be narrowed down. Even if it is at the Mellon Arena, it will have to be narrowed down.

COME ON! LET'S GET THIS THING SOLVED! CONVINCE ME THAT THIS IS IN PITTSBURGH, AND I WILL GO IN SEARCH OF THE KEY.

p.s. I also posted this on Quest 4 Treasure since they seem to be following this hunt also.

I know absolutely nothing about the Whistle Pig hunt, but I know a few small things about Pittsburgh, even though I don't live there....I do however have several friends who do, and I've spent a lot of time there.

Your "egg hunt" reference jogged my memory, and lo---if it wasn't in Wiki:

    Moustache Competition, November 2006
The moustache competition is a group collaborative effort created by a number of WPTS-FM station staff. The idea is to see who might grow the most impressive moustache over the month of November. The idea is based on Jay Della Valle's The Glorious Mustache Challenge. All people are invited to attend by merely growing a moustache. The Fu Manchu, the Natural moustache, and The Handlebar Moustache are all options that various entrants are beginning to grow on their upper lips. The competition is open to anyone at the University of Pittsburgh. This contest follows the 2005 Egg Hunt contest, which won that year's College Broadcasters Inc. award for best station promotion.

Also: the Grateful Dead have a DVD out which was taped in Pittsburgh just prior to their keyboard player's death from overdose. They've played 3 Rivers just about every year since gods know when!

And the 'old rocker'--could they be talking about Donny Iris?

    Anyway, hope this helps!

    shecrab,

WOW! I am glad to see you here! I read all your (many) posts on DAR. You have contributed a lot of great thoughts to that forum. Now if I could only get you hooked on the Whistle Pig....!

I don't think the Egg Hunt at the University of Pittsburgh that you referenced has anything to do with the one in the book. The "key" from "The Whistle Pig" has been in place since February 2, 2003. The egg hunt you mentioned was in 2005. But it might be worth looking into. Perhaps the University of Pittsburgh has a yearly traditional egg hunt.

I will have to check into the Grateful Dead and any connection to Pittsburgh. I have never been a dead head, so any help in that department would be appreciated.

Maybe you can get your Pittsburgh friends involved in the hunt.

    tron,

I have read the posts about Cole on Q4T. It does sound somewhat convincing that he may be the rocker we are looking for based on his appearance. But unfortunately, I have never heard of him before.

    shecrab,

Being a Pittsburgher, I have heard of Donny Iris, and I have heard his music played on WDVE. But I don't know what he looks like. I will have to check him out.

Thanks to both of you for posting.

I know the promotional egg hunt came after TWP was published, but if memory serves (I'm away from home right now) the book is dedicated to 2 radio announcers. Interesting.

Your memory serves you right. The book is dedicated to Don Geronimo and Mike O'Meara "who always inspire me to do more". They were "Don and Mike" of the nationally syndicated show based at WJFK-FM in Washington, DC.

    Hey, Genetic...thanks!!!

Actually, Pgh is one of my favorite towns...and I'm just about read to abandon Dar for TWP and go visit!

My friends who are there now own a pub on Carson St.--Piper's Pub. Fantastic food, and great atmosphere. Tell 'em Christin from Kent sent you.

I don't have the book TWP--but I've been thinking about ordering it to see what it's like. I haven't been paying much attention to it, but it sounds fascinating. Maybe I'll treat myself to a Christmas present and buy it.

True story told to me by Jane Friedman, who lived her whole life in Pgh:

Seems that when the city had finished what Jane called the "Three-hole subway" system back in the 80's, they ran a radio contest to name it. One of the suggestions was The YGDT which stood for "Yinz Goin' Dahn Tahn". It didn't win, but it shoulda.

Also, I remember fondly the commercials for "Pants n'At" by Jim and Scott on WDVE. I think Donny Iris did some of those too--or was involved somehow? I can't remember. They were hilarious, though.

Anyway, that egg hunt thing--I heard about it years ago, but didn't know when the book was mentioning it--it just came smacking together in my memory when you said Pittsburgh and Egg hunt.

I'll order TWP and maybe try this hunt after Jan. 1...?

    shecrab,

I am glad that you will be joining in on the hunt for the key in "The Whistle Pig". While you are at it, you should order a second book for your friends in the South Side. I have never been to Piper's Pub, but if I am over that way, I will certainly stop in and mention "Christin from Kent"!

There is a great deal of information and ideas you can read through on the Quest 4 Treasure site. It will take some time to get through it all. And unfortunately, it doesn't seem like many people are working on this little book right now. I think that once it seemed that the key would be found in Pittsburgh, many people abandoned the hunt. I suppose that is good for me, and for your friends in the area too!

I am finding the book to be quite enjoyable. There are a lot of historical references, and it seems to me that many subjects and words and phrases are repeated in other chapters. It keeps you going in circles, but at least you can feel confident that you are following some kind of link.

I will be anxiously awaiting your input on the forum.

I am waiting too...for my book to arrive. It shoudl come within the week, I believe, from Amazon.

I'm excited about this...my friends in Pgh are probably not going to join in, but there may be others there who will--I used to be a member of the Western Pa. Mensa group there and we loved games and puzzles.

You'll like Pipers--the food is four-star excellent and they have over 100 varieties of scotch.
