We would be glad to enter into an agreement especially if it would mean you can offer us "proof" that your hunt is OK. While we believe in giving people the benifit of the doubt, if you have any info which could be given to the administration here (a total of 2 people) that would allow us to make a positive post about the integrity of this particular hunt, I would suggest doing so as the only by product of that would be more sales for you. Just let us know.

    Default Legitimacy

Can anyone suggest somehow we can prove the hunt is legit? It's a bit of a problem because I can keep saying it is - but I'm not sure how I can prove it.

Would be grateful for (polite) suggestions

    Winnie

    Winnie,

I don't know what it would take to "prove" that it is legitimiate. I'm not even sure what defines a hunt as legitimate over another, but I have 2 issues that may also be bothering other people.

First, the lack of a published value for the prize not only makes people wonder what you are up to, but it also stops a lot of people from ordering the book who might otherwise order it. I realize that you do not want to say what the prize is, but it would go a long way in marketing your hunt if atleast an approximate value was published. It is true that the value of any non-cash prize will fluctuate and not be the same as the published value at the end of the hunt. However, a published value gives people a target and increases interest. Also, it does not have to be published in US dollars, the local currency is fine.

The second thing that sort of sets off alarms is that the first person to solve it may not be the one to actually wint he hunt and this tends ot eliminate any sense of urgency to order. The rules say that you will not notify anyone who submits a solution as to whether it is correct or not until the end date. And, if more than one correct entry is received, then there is some sort of unknown tie-breaker. This gives people the concern that all their hard work may not pay off even if they are the first to solve it. Typically, the first person to solve a puzzle is the winner and they do not have to wait until the end to find out.

I'm not complaining at all, every hunt is different and you are entitled to run it as you see fit. I merely offer these ideas to you in a constructive manner as something you may want to consider.

I have purchased your book and am working it when I have the time.

With the intent of constructive feedback, I'll say that I haven't ordered the hunt, not because of doubts that it is "legit," but because I'm not sure that I like the terms or odds. Too many questions. So here's what has kept me from ordering.

    1. First, the costs aren't in the rules. Why does that matter? Well, I don't know how much the book will be so I have no way of knowing if I prefer that or the pdf. And there seems to be no hurry, as it's not a first-to-solve hunt. It's not clear if the pdf option will go away once the book is available, or if I'll still have that choice.

Also, as the costs are not in the rules, they could change at any time. Prices could go up or down, and fees for bronze/silver certificates could also go up. Although the last point is fairly trivial, now that I've found the costs by actually clicking on the entries button.

    2. Second, the difficulty of the puzzle is unknown. This might be of less concern to me if this was a first-to-solve puzzle. But since there may be a "tie-break" among 2 or 20,000 correct entries, I can't tell if this a test of skill or, in effect, an expensive lottery ticket.

    3. Rules number 26 and 27 seem to be in conflict with each the idea that the hunt will stay open until December 2007, with the possibility of a tie break. I interpret Rule 26 to say that DF will verify that the winner has abided by the rules within 28 days of receipt of the correct entry. Rule 27 seems to indicate that the contest will then be over. (Perhaps Rule 26 should say "whichever shall be later" rather than "whichever shall be earlier." ??)

    Code:
    26. At the Gold level only, following receipt by DF of an entry or entries that DF considers to be correct, a period of 28 days from the close of the competition or from the receipt of the first correct entry, whichever shall be earlier, shall be allowed for DF to verify that the winner has abided by the rules of the competition. In the event that the winner has not abided by the rules of the competition, his winning entry shall be disqualified from the competition, and he shall forfeit the treasure, and he shall no longer be permitted to participate in the competition. DF will give no notification of such disqualification to any person other than that entrant, and the competition will continue as though no winning entry had been received.

    27. In the event that DF does verify that the Gold level winner has abided by the rules of the competition, DF will contact the winner and issue an announcement on the website that the treasure has been won and that the competition is over. At that time DF will also publish the solution to the puzzle on the website. The solution will remain there for a period of at least 6 months.

    4. The value of the treasure is unknown. I have no way of knowing if the value of the prize is even enough to justify the terms of Rule 31. And there is no provision for selecting another winner, if there is one, if the first winner selected doesn't show up. If the prize is really substantial, surely the extra cost to provide travel/accomodations wouldn't be overwhelming.

    Code:
    31. Although DF will try to arrange the public presentation for a date and time, and at a venue, that is convenient to the winner, entrants agree to attend such public presentation, should they be judged to be the winner, whenever and wherever the public presentation may be held. Entrants understand and accept that the winner will be responsible for all the costs and expenses of all travel to, and, should it be necessary; accommodation in the vicinity of, the venue chosen by DF for the public presentation of the treasure.

    5. Finally, given the above reservations, Rule 39 is an enthusiasm killer for me.

    Code:
    39. These rules are subject to change. The latest version of the rules may be found on the website and the competition will always be deemed to be held in accordance with the latest rules displayed there. Ignorance of the latest rules will not nullify them.

I find some of my concerns to be similar to those expressed about the Win My West Palm Beach Home puzzle, which I eventually purchased. But Ken's willingness to reveal his identity, risk his professional credibility, and award a substantial early prize mitigated those concerns for me personally (but obviously not for all).

Hope this helps you understand, and maybe improve your sales,

    Lizzy

Just a note that Winnie is in touch with us and working towards some type of resolution. The past few posts have been priceless as I'm sure Winnie will agree. Thanks for clearly laying out your likes and dislikes in a polite way, it does nothing but strengthen the overall picture and genre as a whole. Thanks to Winnie for being in touch and willing to address our users concerns.

    Winnie,
My internet access is through AOL. If I order this pdf version, what kind of problems will I have downloading? Does AOL prevent this download with spam blockers? If I buy it, I want to know for sure that I'll be able to download and print it.

    Thanks
    Emerald

I'm assuming you wont actually download it from them but from your mailbox. As a Tweleve Plus user, you are welcome to an email address@tweleve.org!

If the .pdf size is bigger than 10 megs (the mailbox limit), I'd be glad to increase yours temporarily so you can accept the file.

Just PM me and let me know!

    Hi Emerald

The pdf file is just under 7Mg in size. I am an AOL user and had no problems receiving the file.
