9.99 GBP United Kingdom Pounds = 17.3506 USD United States Dollars
    1 GBP = 1.73679 USD / 1 USD = 0.575774 GBP

I think the hunt is legitimate.

But from what little I know about the law in the US, I think the dollar value of the prize must be shown in the rules. They can keep hidden exactly WHAT the prize is, but they have to tell HOW MUCH it is worth.

Any lawyers out there that can help clarify?

The hunt is run from England under the laws of England and Wales. Try as it might the US legal system doesn't work here... (As an example: US law forbids US citizens to gamble over the internet. UK law allows it. UK bookmakers have many US customers and are not bound, in any way, to refuse their business). You will note that entry into the Gold level is free. The price you are paying is the price of the book which, if you have it, you will know can be used as a guidebook. It just happens to have a treasure hunt built in!

The exchange rate of the US dollar and the English pound changes by the second. As the prize was paid for in England the value in dollars would fluctuate all the time. One could give an approximate value but it would only be correct at the time given. There's a second problem of perceived value. If you remember 'Masquerade' you'll remember the prize was a 'Golden Hare'. This was last heard of being sold at auction for many times its original cash value. The Winchester Treasure is due to run until end of 2007. What will the value of the prize be then? Changes in valuation of precious metals, gemstones, currency would all affect the 'cash' value of the prize at the time of delivery. If you followed the 'Quest' hunt, which has recently been won after about 15 years, the value of the prize increased enormously over the time period.

I understand your concerns about legitimacy. To that end we have spoken with a representative of the Armchair Treasure Hunting Club in the UK and given him information that we can't reveal to the public at large. They are satisfied that all is OK and will be running an article on us in their next newsletter. They are also hosting a discussion, similar to this, on their members only section of their website.

    regards

    Winnie

I'm sure it would go a long way with the users of this site if the same checks and balances were performed. I'll probably buy the book because it has been called "cool" here lol--but i see no reason why the administration here couldnt be included in the checks seeing as they are sponsoring the hunt. Just an idea. Thanks for the new hunt!

I guess the answer to that is that we can share information with the administration here if they want us to (subject, obviously, to confidentiality agreement between us). Or you guys can ask questions and I'll try and provide answers - but there may be lines we can't cross to maintain either the integrity of the hunt or commercial/personal privacy. As I said before, we're governed by the laws of the UK so there may be stuff that I can't give you for legal reasons.

We think the book is 'cool' too - on this side of the Atlantic we've had great feedback from those who've bought it and we're monitoring website discussions to keep in touch with how people are finding solving the puzzle. And getting quite surprised at the incorrect things that people are saying, too! We hope that the printed version will be available in about 3 weeks now. It will still be available to purchase from the link on Tweleve.org - even for you chaps over the water! If you can't wait that long you can buy the PDF version now.

    All the best

    Winnie
