Default New Hunt! The Winchester Treasure!

    Email from Winchester Treasure:

We are in the process of launching a new treasure hunt - 'The Winchester Treasure'. You can see the details at www.winchestertreasure.com. It's a bit different to the normal hunts because the book is basically a guidebook to Winchester but also contains the puzzle. It works at 3 levels - the first 2, Bronze and Silver, are attained simply by answering questions in the book. These are fairly simple (though not too simple) and successful entrants will be able to claim certificates of achievement.

The Gold level is the level at which there will be serious interest. The prize is 'The Winchester Treasure' and to win it the competitor has to tell us what it is and where it was hidden. Obviously, we can't tell you what it is but we are prepared to say that 'Gold' is a clue! The puzzle runs until the end of 2007. Multiple correct entries in that timeframe will be set a tie-break. A single correct entry will win outright and if no-one has answered by then the puzzle will continue to run.

Just to be quite clear - the puzzle is self-contained within the book and it is NOT necessary to visit Winchester to win at any of the 3 levels.

We are launching on 10th March 2006 by making available a PDF version of the book which can be bought from the website. Unfortunately launch of the printed book was delayed. Because of losing time slots at the printer this is now expected to be at the mid/end of May.

They have offered Tweleve users a 10% discount and this sounds like a fun hunt so get to it!

Am I reading correctly that you have to pay an additional unspecificed "document" charge to have your answer checked for each of the first 2 levels? And that this charge entitles you to 3 guesses?

Sure would be "cleaner" if they specified the charge.

Personally, I would not even bother with the bronze and silver entries. All you get is a certificate even if you are right.

And they don't even check the Gold entries until after the end date.

    Strange.

Hopefully, this being an open forum will help clear things up. Winnie Winchester is a rep from this hunt. Look to her for clarification.

You are quite right that there is only a certificate at bronze and silver. However, feedback we have from hunters in the UK is that they like the idea of getting something even if they don't win the Gold prize. (And we will be checking the Gold prize answers - it's just that we are not going to tell you if you are right. However, if you've solved the puzzle you will be 100% certain that you are right.)

I'd add that when we get the book from the printers that it will be sold in tourist outlets in Winchester as well as the usual bookshops/Amazon etc. and we expect quite a few 'family' sales. One of the reasons for offering the certificates is that the younger members of the family will be able to enter and 'win' something. They may even grow up to be treasure hunters!

The charges are actually detailed on the website. The questions are fairly easily answered (a good web search with a bit of deduction will get all the answers). The charge applied covers the cost of the certificate, postage and packing plus a very small charity donation. To mitigate against high costs we offer the opportunity to enter both Bronze and Silver at the same time, which costs 50p/75c more than entering for one level only. The reason we've said 3 for a limit on entries is that we would expect everyone to get the right answers within the 3 attempts - we'll tell entrants which ones they got wrong.

This part of the hunt isn't a commercial proposition - which is why any excess will go to the charities detailed on the Links page of the website. Equally, we think it's unreasonable to offer continued unlimited submissions - hence the imposition of a small fee.

Any other points, we'll be glad to answer.

I really meant to put a smiley in after that! My brain - such as it is - is at your disposal. However, I guess that many of you are citizens of North America so you may have to wait a day or so for an answer And now - to bed!

Thanks for clearing up the questions Winnie.

I knew there had to be a reason for the certificates.
