Yes, I've been thinking that No.1 is probably the way forward. If we went in date order then we wouldn't be going back and forth.

I've also been looking at the Anglo Saxon capitals that start the texts on the left hand pages. Winnie says that we have to use all of the book. Again, we seem to have too many variables. Firstly, each sentence starts at a different place around the pictures. Then we have the number of pictures, then we have the key, then we have the "answers to our questions help you out with some suggestions" then we have the Anglo Saxon letters themselves, then we have the back & forth time travel, then we have a multitude of dates.

And we haven't even looked at the guards of six or twenty (I liked the suggestion on the Q4T board that this could mean "fort" except there isn't a fort) or even Italy's sun. And as for that cruciverbalist !!!!!

We definitely need a confirmer as to which to use ..... it's just that I can't seem to find one ........ and it's not for lack of trying !!

Is Winchester Treasure still running? The two year anniversary's been and gone, and it's all gone very quiet. FWIW, I am looking into two possible solutions. I thought I was really onto something (which was related to heeding the fish) but nothing doing. Now, instead, I'm going back to something I looked at early on in the hunt. I had no success then, but am looking this time at only some of the clues (whereas before I was looking at all of them). I still don't know where to start though (I know, the answer's in the poem. But that's open to interpretation!). I am going round and round in circles. So to speak.

That's a very good question P. there's been no response from Winnie now for quite a while, so I reckon this hunt might just fade away.

I know what you mean about that poem. I've looked at it every which way, turned it inside out ... whatever. The clues must be in there, but I think Winnie hinted some time ago, that the poem only hints at some. Like you, I've tried many things, but so far I've not found any confirmers that I'm on the right track. I guess that probably means that I'm not !!!

    Hi Hog,

This morning I fired off an email to Winnie, who has just confirmed that the hunt's still running and will remain open until anyone successfully claims the prize. No respite for us then - argh!

P.S. I think there is more to the red herring than first appears. I'm not sure quite what it's telling me though (I have three options!).

Aaaargh indeed ....... no respite at all from those Saxons.

The red herring certainly sounds very curious. Didn't Winnie say that when we find it, we're closer than we think? You'd think that herring would be easy, after all, there's very little to do with fish in the story.

Agreed, but it's how to interpret it that's got me:

    1) It's a one-off red herring clue
    2) The accompanying question is pointing towards something
    3) In conjunction with one of the other answers, it could tell something different again.

    Unhappy

I'm thinking that when we suss the correct red herring, it'll lead us onto the right path to solve this hunt. Winnie said earlier that when we make progress we'll get another clue.

I've been working on the lines that this fish will then relate to another page of the book, that'll make the penny drop. But no luck so far. I like your idea of combining it with one of the other answers, sounds promising to me.

    Question

    Hi Winnie / anyone?

Would you be able to tell me how I can obtain the essential UPN number required to submit a solution to this hunt because there wasn't one printed at the back of my little book and the email address to which you can write and apply for one is no longer active.

    Thanks

    Hi Writerian,

I think you should be able to get an answer from 'sales%winchestertreasure.co.uk' (change the '%' for an @ symbol - I'm just trying to avoid them being spammed!)

I'm still working on the puzzle... I have a rough idea of what's hot and what's not, so to speak, but no real success yet. Hope you have more!

    Good call Passepartout,

I've previously tried the .com address (as it states in the book) but tried .co.uk on your suggestion and bingo - got a response the very next day.

    Thanks
