Default Ice Cream On A Stick

Ice cream on a stick is delicious. Doesn't matter if you are young or old. Big or bold. If you share or stare. Where you are or where it goes. Mostly dripping down on your toes. Ice cream on a stick is delicious.

    Beaufort 4

    A dust storm.
Little tornados born by the breeze.
Coating those unlucky enough to be in their way.
    By luck I avoid it.
Or maybe by fate it avoids me.

    Beaufort 5

Like a vision of Marilyn Monroe,
The wind blows up the tents skirts.
Threatening to turn them into springtime kites,
    Untethered and drifting free.
    But Im sheltered by others
As if they are sacrificing themselves for me.

    Beaufort 6

The storm hits late at night
    Pounding the camp with wind
    And rain,
    And dirt.
Until the morning when the stars begin to blink out
In patterns that are almost recognizable.
Some people are wet and miserable,
But Im in a cocoon warm and dry.

    Beaufort 12

    A fortunate one, perhaps.
    Good, lucky, sometimes both.
Not knowing when, I can still feel its imminent arrival.
It is only a matter of time.
The playful waves of emotion splashing at my feet,
Are only tendrils of omens reaching out.
A warning that my own hurricane is on the way.

    Default Corbie

Now he wonders how much of her plaintive caw
He once mistook for milk and what dim, twisting maw
Stuffed his beak with a diet of worms tweaked
From the loams of her hidden shame. Streaked
With the bleaker taints of blame, she rakes today
With the tines of her childhood self-pities; her own mother
The ghost that rakes beside her. So deeply twine the roots of others
To the long-leaved tree we live in, that forgiving will still
Never be enough to free us from the nests where bitter bills
Taught us how ravens must speak. Croaking decades later,
She repeats that early tongue again, again; a poison parsed by sugar.

    Default Ignorant to blossoms

The sage fisher knows the striper
    Cannot bloom before the lilac.
But I never was wise to riper seasons.
Although I've hooked nothing with reason,
I still use rhyme to throw it back.

    Default I miss the squealing!

I miss the squealing. That noise I would hear right before the giggling or that deep belly laugh. The sound that only the very young usually make because they are so unconditionally loved.

I miss when I heard it from my son on those days we would shop in the small convenience store. When we were the only two shoppers. I would sneak several pennies, nickles and dimes and at least one quarter on the floor in plain site. The squeal he would make when he discovered this treasure on his own. Then the giggle. It would especially be fun to see the look on the cashier standing there with a broom in their hand. Having just finished their cleaning job in wonderment as to how this child found something that just a second ago was not there before.

I miss when I heard it from my daughter. Every day she would hear the noon time church bells ringing out a tune. She would run out into the back yard and start to spin to the sound. That giggle again after the squeal as she was running out the door. The belly laugh when she plopped onto the ground all dizzy.

Then together on those rainy days. The ones without thunder and lightning. When it rained all day long. And our driveway would become the cement pond as we called it. They would run around stomping and kicking the water onto each other. Squealing and giggling.

I fondly remember the very sunny days when we all were so sweaty hot. As I watered my poor wilted plants. They would sneak up behind me unable to hold their giggling and spray me with the hose. Then it was my turn to squeal and we would all end up laying on the ground laughing till we cried.

There were the days that we would take that fun grocery store trip. The one where they were allowed to pick out three new things to try out. Anything they wanted. We would then take our choices home each person carrying their own choices in the grocery bag that they packed themselves. Then the squeal when it was the most disgusting thing ever tasted. It is these recent days that we all giggle about that family tradition.

And food wasn't the only thing we explored upon. When we were bored and didn't have anything to do we went on an explore trip. Got into the car and drove places we had never been. The squeals, giggles and belly laughs at all the new things they saw.

So yes! I do miss the squealing! They just giggle and belly laugh now because they are just too grown up to squeal - just ask them.
