Default '07 Resolutions - How'd You Do, Writers?

All in fun - how'd you do on your '07 resolutions?

(sorry for the green, tweleve liters - I couldn't figure out how to quote these so that they didn't turn black on gray.)

But I'm sort of jumping the gun when it comes to New Year's resolutions. I very recently decided to quit my safe, highly lucrative job in advertising, move to Martha's Vineyard (woohoo, ocean!), and take over my mom's gallery and studio while she opens a new one.

So, my first resolution is just to get there for New Years (aging Saturn don't do me wrong), scramble around for enough cash to cover Cobra, child and spousal support (they come and get you with a big, spikey club otherwise, I've heard), rent there, rent here (I was surprised to find out I had a year's lease in Hummelstown), draw a really big breath, and sit by the grey and raging Atlantic on New Year's day smoking some Drum and toast the future with a Heineken.

Then I'll paint, write and scurry like a maniac until I open the gallery in April.

This is likely to be the total abandonment (to both fire and water) that you mentioned, Santa. It's basically impossible. It makes no sense whatsoever. It's scary and bittersweet and perilous.

    But I'm resolved.

I spent very nearly two decades making what art I have work for commerce. And it has almost killed me. Now, I'm out to make what I know of commerce work for art.

Just today, though, I feel like I'm jumping the Grand Canyon with a honky-tonk upright piano strapped to my back. I'm a natural when it comes to risk, but this one's gonna be a doozy.

    So: all that.

Move. Survive. Change. Serve beauty and truth. Love. Cut down on drinking. Well, whisky anyway. Smoke more (not). Write. Laugh more. Cook for someone. Fish. Crab. Visit Hiroshima. Paint, paint, paint. Write, write, write. Celebrate the ancient enigma and exquisite pain and improbable grace and sweeping joys of being human.

Go swimming every week. Go back to the volunteer work I was doing for the music community. Find a Dar ring. Ride my bicycle more. Stop eating at McDonald's and cook more food. Make that mandala wall I was going to make upstairs, and finish up remodeling and painting that back room. Find a daybed for it. Clean my closet. Put a railing around the back porch. Get rid of the old funky mattress that is leaning against the garage. Plant some forget-me-nots over my doggie's gravesite. And the biggest resolution of all:

..Stop making lists of things to do that make me feel guilty for not having done them before.

I do want to hash out the rest of my novel. Hopefully soon.

Okay, so the edit can't fix the bizarre double quotes.

It's like we get to hear from you twice!

Pffft, I remembered why I don't do resolutions. Because I don't do them, that's why.

...I need to finish those two novels sitting on my desk. DONE. Edit the one, DONE market the other. STARTED, STILL DOING. Get them out there...be aggressive in making it happen. NOT done yet. Write more on novels three and four--still sitting untended in "My Documents." . Try to find a literary agent who will handle my work. Working on these two.

Go swimming every week. DONE and STILL doing! Go back to the volunteer work I was doing for the music community. No time with all the wriiting and swimming! Find a Dar ring. Hah. Ride my bicycle more. No bike riding right now, snow on the ground. Stop eating at McDonald's and cook more food. Done. Make that mandala wall I was going to make upstairs, and finish up remodeling and painting that back room. Find a daybed for it. Done. And now I'll be moving soon. Sigh...Clean my closet. Done. Put a railing around the back porch. Not now. Gonna be moving soon. No way I'll spend that money. Get rid of the old funky mattress that is leaning against the garage. Done. Plant some forget-me-nots over my doggie's gravesite. Done. And some other stuff too...snapdragons, violets. Lovely place. And (soB!) I won't get to see them all bloom because I'll be moving soon. And the biggest resolution of all:

..Stop making lists of things to do that make me feel guilty for not having done them before.
    Done FIRST. Hee hee!!!

All in all, not a bad year for accomplishing my goals!! Now my big one: find a nice place to live by the end of January, in the community I want to live in! Funny--I dreamed about it last night. Nothing like a little synchronicity to start off the day!

You guys are funny. Christin, I give you the Resolution Overachiever Award for 2007! I can, of course, justify every single one of my resolutions that remain on my list. It would be an oh-so articulate speech were I presented with a podium... lol lol lol lol... NOT!

In retrospect, these items prove two things: that I'm willing to sacrifice a lot to get what I want, and what I want changes frequently. But it's good to know that 12pm is still feeling his way around so that he can visit Hiroshima, and it's even better that I got Nodon to say "Pffffft."

Anybody care to post thoughts for '08? I'd like to think that we'll all be together in '09 to laugh at our resolutions again.

    Cool My Rez's

    As for my resolution's -

Still need to make time for excercise.

I finished the first draft of my manuscript (yeah!), so next year, it's on to the 2nd rewrite with emphasis on characters. Currently they're plasticene words fleshed over stiff armature.

I did well by friends and family this last year.

I really enjoyed reading all of your posts. I was not frequenting tweleve during that time and it was nice to read what you all were hopefully heading for.

Me - well for one I took that giant leap of beingkind and banged out some words within these threads. I have never written anything other than absentee excuses before Tweleve's Creative Corner lured me in.

eh! I make the obligatory resolutions.......... weight loss etc. but I just do not put myself on the list just yet. I still have children that I am supporting in a gazillion ways. When they were born I really meant it when I said to my hubby "It's not about us anymore - it's all about them - deal with it!". Found out that was very hard for him and his mom as they both lived the 'only child' life for many years. So it's been a lot of work for the last 21 years. So the weight will come off when it's ready to come off.

So I don't have a resolution I just resolve to keep trying to live my life in the same way. Be kind, considerate and compassionate without needing to know the rest of the story!

And OH! Yes! Stop being embarrassed by the quality of my writing. You all know by now I am not a writer. I'm an explainer. And a ham. So grammar and good writing you will not see. Just fun with my friends.

    j

(Christin! I am close enough to you if you need a helping hand moving. I am also far enough away that you don't need to feel obligated to me when I do. )
