Default Spidey's Big T Writing Contest

This is a contest for approximately 90,000 T. (go team go!) There are multiple parts to this contest, so if one question doesn't appeal, hang tight. I'll switch gears completely for parts II and III.

Participants will earn T just for trying.
Creativity will earn you extra T.
Support of your competitors will earn you extra T.
Humor will earn you extra T.

The winner of each part will get a medal as a prize.
At the end, I'll post a poll for the grand prize winner.
Grand prize winner will get silly amounts of T and a medal.

Deadlines will be posted later, when interest wanes.

    TASK ONE:

This is a crazy, crazy world!

Assume the identity of somebody in the news. You are to blog for us a day in your life. If you choose somebody local, please link us to the real story.

    I'm after brutal sattire.

    Best of luck to all!

I don't want you to think we are not gonna play here.

I've just been busy in the last week. I'm on here for a short time. Sometimes signing on and then going away to get things done.

Just moved my daughter into her first leased apartment. Last year she subletted in the same building for two months - so she knows the landlord and the area. She is working on summer shows down in Pittsburgh and will stay in that apartment for her last year of college.

It's a typical low rent - over the pizza parlor - long skinny stairs up to the apartment type place. The front door from the street won't open fully because when you do open it the stairs are too close to for it to open wide. Then there is a set of stairs added to the back where they overtook the fire escape. With very short turns gradually taking you up to the third floor where the apartments are.

Then my son was home all week with a bad upper respiratory infection. Hubby was out of the country for over a week. So yeah! I am full of brutal satire at this point.

I finally have monday coming with - FINALLY - just me in the house. My cabin fevered son will go back to school. Hubby will go to work in a normal manner and solitude will become a friend soon. soon..................

    First things first - (((jean)))

Don't worry about the contest; half the member list is in chat every day working on different puzzles. There's only so much time in the world. There are no deadlines yet; if I give up then I promise I'll let you know.

In the meantime, relax! This is supposed to be fun.

The chat room will soon be less busy with puzzling (unless you know of a new set for us to do). CISRA ends on Monday, May 5 at 12:00 noon Australian Eastern Standard Time (Sunday, May 4 at 10pm EDT).

Default A Boomers Blog Part 1

So! When you hear the phrase “Baby Boomer” do you roll your eyes?

Just wanted to impart some possible unknown stuff, forgotten nostalgia and some things you just didn’t want to hear about. So hang onto your classic rock station and take a trip with a ‘boomer’ born just half a decade after it all started.

Us ‘boomers’ were typically born between ’46 and ’67. Whilst the rigid restraint practiced prior to the end of WWII kept the population from booming, everything came full circle after the war ended. Men returning home allowed the women to leave their wartime work behind them. Once again allowing the peace to settle amongst the male population. Men worked – women birthed babes and took care of the home. Marriage WAS a wife’s career.

Now around the late ‘50’s things started to slow down a little and then the introduction of the birth control pill around ’60 gave women a bit more control over when she would keep popping out those little munchkins.

The true ‘boomers’ know that those born between say ’61 to ’65 were just shadows or otherwise known as “late boomers”. A true boomer would have reached their late teens when the Vietnam War was at its most intense.

My brother was born in ’49. Enlisted during his junior year of high-school and was sent to the DMZ (Korea) Zone. He was there during the ’68 problems but was never injured. Became a favorite of the locals and quickly knew what to do and more importantly what not to do culturally. Saved his arse more than once.

There are so many things a boomer can remember once prompted. We were the first generation where economics allowed most of us to have a television in the home. A time when such a diverse cross section of people watched the same shows, listened to the same news and told the same jokes.

There were the ideal family shows. Father Knows Best. Leave It To Beaver.
We were also brought first hand the personal tragedy of the assassinations of the Kennedy’s and of King thru our television.

Rock and roll was given to us thru the great transistor radio, vinyl records then eventually gave us reel to reel in our homes. Eventually we would be witness to the most horrible delivery of music to date. The eight track. I hate to say it. But there’s a player lurking in my basement somewhere. It’s this family’s boogey-man waiting to scarf up one of us into its gaping slot.

Some other little tid bit you may not know about. A little less than half the boomers were dropouts from formal religion.

Something I read on a wiki site helps explain the span of boomers all over the world.

It is jokingly said that, whatever year they were born, boomers were coming of age at the same time across the world; so that Britain was undergoing Beatlemania (which in fact occurred before the peak of the British baby boom in 1966) while people in the United States were driving over to Woodstock, organizing against the Vietnam War, or fighting and dying in the same war; boomers in Italy were dressing in mod clothes and "buying the world a Coke"; boomers in India were seeking new philosophical discoveries; American boomers in Canada had just found a new home after escaping the draft south of the border; Canadian Boomers were organizing support for Pierre Trudeau;. It is precisely these experiences why many believe that trailing boomers (those born in the 1960s) belong to another cohort, as events that defined their coming of age have nothing in common with leading or core boomers (which Daniel Yankelovich and other demographers made perfectly clear).

Default A Boomers Blog Part 2

When I think of the sixties I remember a time of experimentation in illegal substances, war, rock and roll, fashion statements and creative personal hygiene. The era of free love and crunchiness.

So many references you will recognize. But we boomers! We lived thru it.

Being Catholic I saw the breaking of Catholicism of Pius XII by Kennedy and John XXIII. What a change that made to a girl who went to Catholic school.

You had the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion, the construction of the Berlin Wall, the Cuban missile crisis. Tax funded schools got up close and personal with the Supreme Court religion in the prayer decision of ’62 and saw the larger than life face of Madalyn Murray O’Hair on the tube.

You had the ‘60’s Bobbys. Bobby Vinton, Bobby Vee, Bobby Rydell and Bobby Darin. I listened to The Beach Boys daily. Then some of the greats. The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Stones, The Supremes, The Doors, Hendrix, Floyd, Zeppelin. The list goes on and on.

Great movies remembered were stuff like Barbarella, 2001, Time Machine, Village of the Damned, Dr. Strangelove, Robinson Crusoe on Mars, Bonnie and Clyde, Rosemary’s Baby, Scorpio Rising and many more.

And the people of the boomer era who also entertained us in their own way: Ingmar Bergman, Woody Allen, Muhammad Ali, Castro, Chavez, Lenny Bruce, John Coltrane, Capote, Miller, Steinbeck, Vonnegut, Timothy Leary, Hank Aaron, Bobby Hull, Bobby Orr, Sandy Koufax, Mickey Mantle, Joe Namath, Bart Starr, Roger Maris, Willie Mays, Joe Namath and my personal sports hero because he would carry me on his shoulder when I visited the stadium in Baltimore as a little girl - Johnny Unitas. So many people so little room to mention them.

A boomer could go on forever. But I will start the end of this waxing now. As I type this for an entry in a thread on a forum on the internet I am reminded of the introduction of the IBM 360 sometime in ’65. It was the key event technologically only to be rivaled by the ARPAnet in ’69, which then became the Internet.

So I visit my friend’s everyday now from all over the world. I can read their words and they can read mine. Instantly.

And sometimes I work on puzzles only to the extent that I can save what little brain cells I have left from the ‘boomer’ years.

    Wax on Baby!

    Peace Out!

    Excellent, Jean!

Technically the boomers are in the news a lot these days, so full points to you, Jean. Bonus points for "free love and crunchiness" and even more for being brave enough to get this party started.

When I was in college (back in the day...) I told everybody I knew to give me money. Lots of it! I wanted us to invest in an upscale assisted living facility, b/c it was easy to see from my studies that demand was going to far outweigh supply after the year 2000. I so wish that I had been able to make that investment back then. It would've been like saying "I bought Intel at 2!"

I'll award T at the end, if it's all right with you.

    Great job!

tyvm Carol! I know I didn't follow the prompt (assume the identity of somebody in the news). That one is still working around in my head - perhaps I will still post that one later.

I think this may be the first time I've ever been stumped by a challenge. I just can't think of anything worthwhile! This is very frustrating, as I really feel like writing something, but just can't wrap my brain around this.

I have been so extremely busy lately that there's been a channel block in my brain I guess....maybe that's it; maybe I'm just packed to the gills with other stuff.

That other stuff, however, is coming to an end today. I've pretty much gotten every one of my obligations obliged--so perhaps I can free up my mind's author and put some words in here soon.
