Default Pottery shards on page 80

I count 28 pieces of pottery on page 80. Five are complete pots/kettles, with no chips showing. Then there are numerous other pieces in various states of completeness/size. Two shards are half-hidden behind Rusful's legs, near his knees.

I'm playing with trying to get 5 distinct sizes or either 5 states of completeness (i.e., a whole small pot is the same value as a whole large kettle). Then what look to be arrows in some of the piece configurations would be a clue to start at the large kettle (for example) and go counter-clockwise to pair up and get 14 grid combinations for a Rusful location.

That monster Darkling on page 55 has '80' in his forehead for some reason.

    Default Page 80

Great observation perchprism. Also, I've wondered if Page 83 could be Rusful's map. This is the inside of Rusful's cave where Ana is held captive. Look at the Darkling on the top, far right. His nose is an arrow pointing down at the one branch that curves to the right. Rusful (the serpent) is looking at the box from the right, but he's also inside the box to the left of the Darkling's head behind the word "Not Whole." I think this is the direction for Rusful's knothole.
    Dreams really do come true!

Hmm, that's interesting. I had counted 10 pairs of eyes for a possible Rusful token on that page, but couldn't see any good way to categorize them into 5 types. The serpent would make 11, if there's a way to organize them. The dated signature '03 seems to rule out the border as a coded token location.

On page 80 the broken bottle above Rusful's right knee appears to have been drawn in after-the-fact. We know MS prepared his drawings before heading out to drop tokens, then had to come back and finish the details of the drawings to encode the token locations. Page 83 is signed and dated '03. That means he'd have to have had prior knowledge of the token's map before adding the serpent and the curving branch to the right. but it's possible he re-arranged the Darkling/Serpent border to coincide with Ana's willow tree in the manner you suggest, or added that odd branch later, after deciding where to put Rusful's token.

The Fairy on page 78 looks as though she's pointing to something that ought to be a token map, but there's nothing there. No dark vine, anyway. I thought this would be the natural page for Rusful's token map, but why the Fairy? Fairies didn't hide Rusful's crystallized remains, afterall.

I looked at the drawing on page 83 very carefully and don't see any signs of post ad hoc manipulation, but that doesn't mean anything. All we know for sure is that the border was drawn and dated '03. Ana's picture isn't very well drawn, and could have been a rush job. The Darkling on the top right whose nose peeks over the frame of Ana's picture could be a device to make us think the two parts were done at the same time.

The pottery shard shaped like an arrow on the Rusful page that you are referring to has always been a thorn in my side. I believe that it has a purpose, but I have never been able to explain exactly what.

Additionally, on the spider page where Rusful is sprinkling the dark dust, it appears to me that the dust is forming letters. The first is an S, followed by letters I cannot remember. (don't have the book with me at work right now.) I have never seen anyone else express this observation, however, this too has always stuck out to me as something important.

Just thought I'd add my $.02

    Default Code

I have heard somewhere that those dust letters say CODE, and that the X's that the dust makes is meant to refer to the pattern on the spider's back that was the "code" to solving it's puzzle.

That's an interesting theory, but that's not what I saw when I looked at it....I'll look again when I get home, but I swear the first letter is an S...

    Default I dont know

I dont know if it really does say CODE or not, but I thought I saw an "e" on the end of it, so I just took that person's word for it. If it says something else, though, I'd sure like to know what it is!

    Default is it just me...

Hey...is it just me, or is there a "map" on page 101 in the lower right corner? I always thought it was the pook map, but then pook was found, and it wasnt with that map. I know of several places that look like that map, but I have no clues to lead me to any of them thus far. I was just wondering if anyone else saw it besides me? Maybe it isnt even Rusful's map. Maybe it leads to something else like Anna or something....ah...the wishfull thinking of those who have found the squat token one too many times.

Well, I haven't been able to match the crockery pieces into any meaningful series of five different characteristics. At least, so far it's all garbage. But there's something compelling about how the broken pottery and cauldrens are scattered about.

When the fairies trashed Rusful's lab, they were careful not to step into the septic ooze that Rusful is standing in on page 80. There are 6 tiny pieces in the cesspool, so I'm not counting them.

The handle on the tiny cauldren next to the largest cauldren is a curved arrow indicating to go anti-clockwise. Then there's the piece in the lower right quadrant that's obviously an arrow, pointing North, again indicating counter-clockwise. Below the large cauldren on the left there is a pottery shard shaped like a fist with a finger pointing down, still counter-clockwise. Between Rusful's legs just above the ooze there's an arrow piece pointing left.

I think we're supposed to tiptoe counter-clockwise around the pool, and pair up these pieces of junk. If MS planted the Rusful token, came home and drew in the pottery to encode the location, there might be clues to indicate that. The broken bottle at Rusful's right knee was drawn in after-the-fact. It's in the foreground but belongs in the background to make visual sense, which is all to say that he didn't have to add it in unnecessarily, because it adds nothing to the picture, so why did he? I'm guessing there was a purpose to it, and that purpose was to encode Rusful's token location. He was in a hurry and didn't notice that he'd goofed the perspective.

I've tried grouping the pieces by size, by color, and by % of intactness and have had no luck so far. When doing the Ant puzzle, I started from the top down, discounted the dandelion stems on the inner border margin, and never came close to solving the puzzle. I still don't understand why, because I'd figured exactly how it should be done. Perhaps someone can pick up here and solve this page (if there's anything to solve). I'm not giving up, but I'm not making any progress either.

    Hey, Jeff
Glad to see you're back in the hunt. I'll see if I can do some matching of the shards today, since Clue 4 is still eluding me. Try mirrowing the bottom of p 80 and look at the rocks with the bottom of the page turned to be the top. I want to see if you see anything, too.
By the way, I just can't believe the p 37 info. I feel like I've lost all credibility because of it, so I've been hesitant to post anything. I still believe that there is a lot hidden in the art that he didn't reveal in the Soltion book, so maybe he's saving those ploys for his next book.
