    Sorry Folks---to continue...
the STAR CLOCK is an actual method of reckoning time.

    ===============================================

    TUTORIAL ON THE STAR CLOCK

    Locating the North Star-
The "Big Dipper" , part of the constellation Ursa Major is the most easily recognized star pattern in the sky, and is close enough to the North celestial pole that it is visible in the night sky throughout the year
The big dipper looks like a spoon in the sky, Two bright stars forming the handle and four making the scoop. The two stars in the scoop furthest away from the handle are the "pointer stars".
Follow an imaginary line connecting the pointer stars from the bottom of the scoop out. The first bright star you see is Polaris, The North Star.

    Reading the Clock-
Facing North , imagine the line joining the pointer stars to the North Star as the hour hand of a clock
Read the star clock almost exactly as you would an ordinary clock, if the line points vertically down read six O'Clock, if it points vertically up read 12 O'clock. To be really accurate you would have to account for the fact that the face of the clock is not flat like the face of an ordinary clock, but drawn on the Celestial Sphere which you are viewing from the inside out. Consequently, the line between 9 O'clock and 3 O'clock is not a straight horizontal line like it would be on an ordinary clock but more of a frown. The result is that star clock times between 9 and 3 O'clock are spread out on the 12 O'clock side and squeezed together on the 6 O'clock side

At this time the star clock appears to read about 7:30 . The even numbered hours are shown in this diagram, notice that the 12 O'clock and 6 O'clock positions appear truly vertical, but there appears to be more angle between the 10 O'clock and 2 O'clock positions than there is between the 4 O'clock and 8 O'clock positions.

Approximately two hours later the star clock appears to read about 6:30. Notice the frowning line going from the 9O'clock to the 3 O'clock positions.

Converting from Star Clock to Local Time
The critical things to keep in mind about the star clock are :
The Star Clock moves backwards relative to a standard clock ( counter clockwise ). So the clock reads 6 O'Clock before it reads 5 O'clockThe Star Clock makes one complete revolution in 24 hours, instead of 12 hours for a standard clock, So the Star clock moves at half the speed of a regular clock. Therefore, when the star clock reads 3 O'Clock it is actually 2 hours before the time when the Star Clock will read 2 O'Clock
You will always be reading the star clock at night, so the most convenient ways to figure out the present clock time is to know what time the star clock reads at midnight local time ( this changes throughout the year, see below )
eg. if the star clock reads 5 O'Clock and you know that at midnight local time it should read 4 O'clock, then you know it must be two hours before midnight, or 10 PM local time.

That's interesting, quakrspecl. It would be something MS probably would know about, since he's science, math, history...I know he was inspired by "Masquerade", and its treasure was buried near a cross--is that right? Or was it just a tall monument? I can't remember at the moment. The finder would have to go there on one particular day--the spring equinox--when the "light of equinox" made the shadow fall across the treasure spot. (If I remember right.) This sort of reminds me of that, because in a way, the monument in Masquerade was used as a clock, though not the same way.

This cross is an interesting parallel to the Masquerade monument, anyway, and it's one other thing that makes me think Rusful was not a last-minute add-on, but planned from the beginning, with clues put in the book.

Here's my idea (or one of them): I'm still thinking there might be longitude/lattitude numbers in the book. On p.41, I see where Amy *could* have got the number 122 for longitude (Golden Gate is at 122 W longitude). The letters in the green vine on the left margin "C P" (which the pickensrooter is pointing to) indicate that line there would be the "100th Parallel". ("C" is Roman numeral for 100, "P" is for Parallel.) The cracker next to it is bitten off right where the 22nd dot would be. (The dots on that cracker have to mean something, right?) The shape on the left of the tree there mimics the shape of the California coast. The other line crosses through it right where San Francisco would be. It's at 37 (almost 3 N longitude. There are 3 cracker crumbs on one side of the cracker, and 7 on the other side. Hmmmm. Also, in the picture on the flour tin, the hummingbird's wing goes across the water, suggesting a bridge. Anyone think this could be right? Maybe he used this to help pinpoint a location, and supported it with the 24 letters in the centers from p.66? Just an idea--if it's wrong, you can just say I have a great big imagination!

how come everyone is asssuming it (the solve) starts with Golden Gate? It is highly possible, unless im not clued in on something, that it could be Prayer Book Cross Nears Sign or something, If you websearch Prayer Book Cross, the one out there in Cali is the only one, and there have been other tokens found by specific location inside a park without ever mentioning the park's name. Well glad to see this token is all over with, and I say AMY and them should sell their answer to that guy on yahoo and bag an extra $1,000 to hold them over til the end of this year when they get their rock

heh while looking at the web for the location, look at the last of this url, it fits right in: ww.ixeh.net/faith/Treasure/Prayerbook/sign_cross.html

ok enuff of my jibber jabber for now, but im also interested MS wont comment as to if there is more tokens out there.... he must laugh knowing some people are hooked and go insane not knowing that 1 detail
