I don't see how this can be anything but the exit that has been searched in Texas.

Texas - Chili, cheese, Lone star, saltines.

    I-35 - wall marks

    Exit 180 - Digital readout

Again we are using "clues" for a state and 2 plaintext pulls for the numbers. Same method. If the number 35 refers to WV, it would be the first time a number clue has been used to reference a state. In each solve, the numbers are used for HM and the word games/clues are used for S. I can understand wanting to play with the digital readout to come up with new numbers, but using the method - we use 180. It stands out and is used as a plain pull with no manipulation.

I'm thinking it may be an issue like Ohio and it may be worth another visit to double check for replaced markers.

I completely agree with this, however:

wasn't the state for floor 5 indicated by the number 21 on the magic square?

    Thank you! I stand corrected:

More accurately : the first time a non-manipulated number has been used for the state.

    Default Laredo?

There is a beautiful rest area/ welcome center on I-35 at exit 18.
(Who says you have to use the whole 1:80? The Highway number
for the first floor apparently used only the "81" from the year 1981.)
And the Welcome center does sort of look like an eye from the aerial view.

The NY Times frontage was published on August 1, 1981. So 8-1-81, reinforced that. You guys are close down there--good luck to you.

    Default I-10 exit 1

Until someone finds the emerald in Texas at the I-35 exit 180 rest area,
I am still looking for alternative locations.

There is a number "10" with an exclamation point on a yellow sign
    in the smokey chamber.

I-10 is one of the first Hyw's at the Texas border. It also happens
to be associated with Hwy 180 there.

Looking for milepost numbers, I was struck by the sight of
the toilet plunger standing straight and tall like a number 1.
(The milepost numbers are not all Arabic Numerals.)

There is a rest area/welcome center near Anthony, Texas on
    I-10/Hyw180 at milepost 1.

    Anyone near there?

    Default I-35 Exit-7

There is a "turnout" on I-35W at exit-7. It is not a full-blown rest area.
The 7 laser beams do have an "eye" and Road image on the wall near them.

Yes, I know that it is not actually the number 10..That it is probably the
word "No!" which is partially exposed...but ...I am looking for
U.S. Interstate numbers found in Texas...and there are quite a few!

Sounds like we think alike, AP. I have considered stops along I-10 for the same reason, but didn't find anything inspiring enough. I kinda like the idea for the one off of I-35W - it's close enough that I could probably check it this weekend.

I have also looked at I-20 as a possibility because of the stenciled H2O on the barrels. Nothing too exciting there either.
