Sorry I haven't been on much. I bought a cool Magellan device that allows me to use my laptop and connect to the 'net anywhere in the US - using Satellite Technology. Pretty darn slick, but a tad slow.

So I'm out camping at Stonelick lake in Ohio, watching people dig in the trees. I wonder if it's like this everywhere? I'm not on RV power, so I can only get on for brief times like now. The I gotta charge it up again. Stonelick (don't ya love the name) is very nice if ya every get a chance. They allow motor boats, but only with electric motors, so it remains peaceful (except for the scratching and digging of trovers). I just love to watch them dig for something that is no longer there, but I really don't know what they are looking for. Gee, I haven't kept up with pook or the spider. Am I close to Pook or the SPIDER?

    Gotta go charge up.

tried to post the following with dailyk2 and that bombed also. wish i knew what the heck was up with that. re-booted and the "blah" post went though, so let's try again. (in case you're wondering, i've hand compiled machine code back in the day for fun, so it's not like i need help turning on a computer)

trainor/skyecali - as posted above, i can't freaking post to threads or pm's using my dailyk account from home (but i can read them, for some as of yet unexplained to me reason) so here you go:

trainor - the letter you asked about is no where in the solution he came up with. rough area of the country - south/westish

skyecali - not in that state at all - but a days drive i expect as the master says. guess it depends on how fast and how long you drive what you can cover in a day.

i really don't mean to be cryptic. i'll point you in the right (or at least his) direction, but there's only so much i can share about his approach. he'll decide in the very near future how to proceed.

i can't stress enough that this thread is about him - not me. unless i get hooked, in a day or so no one will probably remember there was a dailyk.

or a daily k effing 2 for that matter.

    Daily,

was his answer short, like 7 or 8 letters or was it long, like 16 or 17 letters?

oberdink - more than 8 and less than 16 characters - so in between, but closer to the higher number.

and it spells the name of a small obscure site perfectly.

three words - and like i said - no abbreviations, no anagrams, no guessing.

as i aluded to earlier, there could be another way to interpret the message.

let's say it spells out abcdevwxyz-site-place where "site" and "place" are absolutely unambiguously the kind of words you all are searching for. generic crap like lake or park or camp or mountain or refuge or what ever. (i've changed the number and distribution of characters in abcdevwxyz to protect the innocent)

here's the problem - you can split abcdevwxyz into abcde and vwxyz and the message would still make sense. a great deal of sense. and the split would make perfect sense based on the....clues. that's what bugs me. and that place would be very far away from where he went today.

it's hard to come up with an example, but i'll give it a shot.

let's say it spelled out "tampabay-sewer-system" and the map pointed to the exact middle of a manhole in tampabay. (i'm leaving the spaces out of tampa.....bay to make a point)

my buddy would be in tampabay looking at the manhole indicated exactly by the map wondering why he can't find the token.

the problem is, there is another place unambiguously called "bay". and there's good reason to believe "tampa" would be a modifying clue to tell you where in "bay" to look.

since you all are way more into puzzles than i am, hopefully that example gives you the gist of what i'm talking about.

forgot to mention that using a brute force method for grid keys with his dandelion pairings yields 119 lines of gobbledy-gook and one perfect message.

unfortunately, with 2 possible meanings, per the above post.

The initials to his three words wouldn't be DCP, would it?

    This sounds quite promising.

I thought 'DCP' was in Washington state, which wouldn't be described as the south west, so I hope it isn't that one.

dailyk(2): is the other (two-word) place still in the south west, or the other side of the country? Did the solution jump right out, or did your friend have to tweak it a bit for it to make sense?

The initials to his solution are not DCP. And he was not in, or even near, Washington state yesterday.

Also, just wanted to clarify one point of my tampabay example above (and finish responding to doublecross's last post).

The tampabay interpretation (i.e., one word) would very obviously be talking about a unique place with no other clues needed to pin-point the location - other than the drop cap map, which seems to align perfectly.

With the tampa bay interpretation (i.e., two parts), the bay part would be an abbreviation, but one that is easily understandable. For example, let's say the abbreviation was FL (in keeping with the tampabay theme). I think we'd all agree that would mean Florida, as opposed to, I don't know, french Louisiana - hey it must be in New Orleans!

Hopefully that makes sense to you all. I neglected to mention that in my post above, so I definitely wanted to point that out, so as not to mis-lead anyone. And the two part location is not south/westish - it would be considered one of the other quadrants for sure.

Also, even though the tampa clue would help determine where in bay to look, I think additional clues would definitely be required to nail down the location.

I really hope and do not think it's the two part location, because it would be nowhere near as elegant and straight forward a solution as the one word solution. But since it's a possibility, I felt I had to throw that out there, in the spirit of sharing as much as I feel I can.

Daily...if you are using AOL, or another not so common browser, that may be the source of your trouble. IE seems to be the best for the forum (in my experiences anyway).
