Default Eden and Eve, Eyes and the letter E in general

With the Masquerade "eye to fingertip to letter" method in mind, I had experimented with a ruler, drawing a wide variety of lines through illustrations where I thought there might be a connection between or among important points. I noticed on p. 7 that lines from the dolphin's tail through Neptune's eyes would hit the two letters E in the word "deep." Initially, this didn't stand out in any way from other experimental lines.

Some time later, I wondered in a message to my silent partner whether the lines to the tip of the tail represented the letter Y, and whether using letters E in the border to spell out "eye" would provide clues toward a solution. I decided to apply the strategy to p. 19 to see whether the lines would work with Fandango's eyes as seen in the camera lens. The iris flower in this picture, the "an eye reflects" phrase, as well as the fox's red eyes, has made me assume that the eyes are somehow essential to the solution here.

The lines that seemed "right" on the camera page go through the fox's eyes with one side going into the first E in "forever," and the other going into the E in "held." The lines also go right through the fox's two visible teeth and along the sides of his mouth. Both lines pass through the key image on the lens, although that's not hard to do since it's so large. The apex of the lines - which I realized is more like a V, or possibly an X, than a Y - seems to set off the word "mile" from the word "smile" by extending the V into the frame.

Instead of "eye," I felt like this was an "Eve" strategy, especially when I noted that one of the lines on this page used the word "forEVEr." I started look for "Eve" words in the borders and text, and found a number of them at what seem like meaningful places. (E.g., "before tomorrow eve" on p. 14.) The strategy or motif seemed potentially more promising when my silent partner reminded me that there is a crytpic Adam, Eden and Hell reference in the text on p. 49. I even pondered the relevance of the pair of dice (paradise?) in Cadillac Mack's car on p. 44.

Later I was looking at the Fandango illustration on p. 5 and the accompanying text and it hit me: Fandango lives in a den. What kind of den? Quite possibly an E-den. Conveniently, there is a letter E on the left side of the den in this illustration, right next to the serpent's head. There is a section of Mount Desert Island called Eden, a settled area within the Town of Bar Harbor just after you cross the bridge from the mainland. Everything seemed to be falling into place.

Also in the p. 5 illustration is a tree covered with keys. Is this an allusion to the Tree of Knowledge? Does Fandango's theft of the key equate to Adam and Eve eating the forbidden fruit? In the resolution, Fandango answers the skepticism from the Lady of the Wind by explaining that kelp is a kind of forest (of the soul) - maybe he has come full circle with the tree idea.

Around this time, my silent partner was experimenting with lines and she noticed that there is only one place on the yellow/orange/red border of p. 5 where the colors don't correspond to colors on the opposite border. She drew a line across the page and noted that it seemed to skirt the lower edge of the roof of the spring house. It struck me that this edge of a roof is referred to as the "eaves."

Others in this forum have noted that the letter E seems to crop up in noticeable ways: the four colorful letters E in the border of p. 19, for instance. Add to that the E on the den on p. 5, a pale green E in the water behind Neptune's trident on p. 7, the E-shaped teeth on the key (and, possibly, a corresponding E-shape in the cloud) on p. 19. Maybe the trident itself on p. 7 is intended to fit into the E motif, providing yet another approach to the "see my sceptre" instructions. I've been thinking of the skeleton keys as F-shaped, but my silent partner has pointed out that they might be interpreted as E-shaped, if you count the round end of the key as part of the letter.

Bottom line is, I've been thinking about the Eve and Eden possibilities for awhile, and I'm not sure where to go next. I have a theory that the key will be found at Fandango's den (den = end), and that this den might be in the area of the island known as Eden.

I don't know how far to take the metaphor: Is the Lady of the Wind = Eve? Is the key = apple? Does that make Fandango = Adam or, as Eve's partner, is Neptune = Adam? Maybe Fandango is the serpent who delivers the apple?

I haven't been able to make much sense of other potential "EVE" lines connecting border letters E through eyes on other pages. Maybe someone in this forum can help to apply this pattern to other pages and offer theories about how a connecting V can make sense in another place. Or maybe you will find other Adam/Eve/Eden/paradise clues that don't involve drawing V lines. For instance, Astreeturover noted that certain lines on the fairy illustration (p. 26) seem to pick out the letters "a pel." Maybe this isn't just an inside joke about Pel Stockwell's name, but is also a reference to an apple - possibly a code word for the golden key we seek. Same here. They've been focusing on the red letters.

    Fandango is shown in repose.

But the bottom non-red letters yield "reposeful".

I'm not sure if you are saying you feel the key is buried in the ground, but being a national park it is illegal to dig holes, which disturbs the ground and other natural features. The authors state no laws should be broken in searching for the key, and that it is not on private property. It is also against park regulations to leave trails because it damages the natural undergrowth and sensitve areas like wetlands and even lichen or barnacles on rocks. There is a national park policy regarding geocaching because it has apparently become a problem with many off-trail sites, pollution from abandoned contents, and people tramping all over plants and sensitive areas. I think (I hope) the authors honored the national park regulations when they hid the key.

OK, I understand now. I was thinking it means there are different levels to pictures, text, magic squares, &/or border phrases -and that the real meaning lies below the surface. The trick is finding out what the hidden meaning is!

Good luck and we can use a new set of eyes on this.
